(CTE) provides these updated geotechnical recommendations for the subject project. These recommendations supersede conflicting recommendations in the referenced geotechnical documents, as applicable. The recommendations are provided in response to a client questionnaire, provided herewith, and the numbering for the responses corresponds with the numbering of questions in the attached questionnaire. 1) The referenced geotechnical documents are generally applicable to the proposed new project, except where superseded by responses provided herein. 2) Based on the information provided in the referenced documents, a site soil classification of Class C is considered appropriate. Cross sections provided in the referenced report indicate granitic rock (Kgr) underlies the site and building footprint, generally at a depth of less than ten feet below finished grade. Cross section B-B', depicted on Figure 3 of the referenced update report (Geocon, 2016), indicates a maximum engineered fill depth underlying the site of approximately 42 feet in the southern portion of the site. However, cross section B-B' also indicates that the maximum engineered fill depth underlying the building footprint is approximately 28 feet, and as stated previously, the majority of the site and building footprint are underlain by less than ten feet of engineered fill. 1441 Montiel Road, Suite 115 I Escondido, CA92026 J Ph (760) 746-4955 I Fax (760) 74&-9806 f www.cte--inc.net Update Geotechnical Recommendations Proposed Carlsbad Oaks North Business Park, Lot 17 Whiptail Loop, Carlsbad, California Mayl7,2021 Page 2 CTE Job No.: 10-161220 The seismic ground motion values listed in the table below were derived in accordance with the ASCE 7-16 Standard that is incorporated into the 2019 California Building Code. This was accomplished by establishing the Site Class based on the soil properties at the site, and calculating site coefficients and parameters using the United States Geological Survey Seismic Design Maps application. Seismic ground motion values are based on the approximate site coordinates of 33.143889° north latitude and -117.247825° west longitude. These values are intended for the design of structures to resist the effects of earthquake ground motions. SEISMIC GROUND MOTION VALUES 2019 CBC AND ASCE 7-16 . Therefore, Type I or II PCC should be considered for new foundations and other embedded concrete improvements. PCC water to cement ratio should be determined by the structural engineer, but is not anticipated to be above 0.50. PCC compressive strength should be a minimum 4,000 psi or as per the structural engineer. Resistivity and soluble chloride testing results were not provided in the referenced update geotechnical report (Geocon, 2016), therefore, at a minimum, it is likely prudent to utilize plastic piping and conduits where feasible. However, CTE does not practice corrosion engineering. Therefore, if corrosion of metallic or other improvements is of more significant concern, a qualified corrosion engineer could be consulted. S: \Projects\ 10-16 I 22G\Ltr _Update Geo Report. doc Update Geotechnical Recommendations Proposed Carlsbad Oaks North Business Park, Lot 17 Whiptail Loop, Carlsbad, California May 17, 2021 Page 3 CTE Job No.: 10-16122G 4) The risk associated with liquefaction and seismically induced settlement hazard at the subject project is very low due to the existing dense compacted fill and very dense nature of the granitic bedrock, and the lack of a permanent, shallow groundwater table. The permanent groundwater table is not anticipated to be encountered within twenty feet of the bottom of existing slab. Please note that seasonal precipitation patterns and irrigation practices could result in perched groundwater, likely at the fill-bedrock interface, which varies in depth beneath the building. Once the location for the improvements has been determined CTE can provide further analysis of at what depth the fill-bedrock interface is beneath the improvement area. 5) Based on Expansion Index (EI) testing results provided in the referenced update geotechnical report (Geocon, 2016), the prevailing site soils in the upper three feet are anticipated to exhibit a Very Low expansion potential (EI < 20). Localized Low EI materials may be present onsite. 6) For load-bearing improvements placed directly on the ex1stmg slab on grade, an allowable soil bearing pressure of 2,000 psf is considered appropriate. The allowable bearing value may be increased by one-third for short-duration, non-cyclical loading, which includes the effects of seismic forces. Appropriate area and point loads on the existing concrete slab itself should be determined by the project structural engineer, considering the underlying allowable soil bearing pressure provided above. 7) Due to the granular nature of the engineered fill at the subject site, temporary excavations are not anticipated to sustain vertical faces greater than approximately two to three feet. It is anticipated that new footings for equipment pads and other improvements will be relatively shallow and limited in area. CTE anticipates that typical temporary cross-brace shoring will be suitable for excavations for new footings. Cross-brace shoring can be sacrificial, or removed gradually during concrete placement. If shoring is utilized, monitoring may consist of visually inspecting the slab-on-grade in the area of the excavation for cracks and other signs of distress. Additional monitoring may be performed using manometers. Once foundation plans for the project are fully developed, the plans should be provided to CTE for review to assess whether additional shoring or monitoring recommendations are appropriate. Near-surface fill soils are considered Type C soils. Temporary slopes should not exceed an inclination ratio of L5: I (H: V). Maximum temporary slope height is five feet, otherwise the geotechnical engineer should be consulted for further recommendations. 8) Existing recommendations provided in Sections 7. 7.1 and 7. 7 .2 of the referenced update geotechnical report (Geocon, 20 I 6) are considered appropriate and applicable for the proposed improvements. Please note that the recommended minimum footing embedment of 24 inches should be measured from the adjacent soil subgrade (i.e., beneath the existing slab and slab underlayment). 9) New isolated footings within the building perimeter are not required to be connected to the building foundation system. If new footings are not connected to the existing S:\Projects\l0-16122G\Ltr_Update Geo Report.doc Update Geotechnical Recommendations Proposed Carlsbad Oaks North Business Park, Lot 17 Whiptail Loop, Carlsbad, California Mayl7,2021 Page 4 CTE Job No.: I0-16122G foundation system, joints between new and old concrete slab-on-grade sections should be constructed with appropriate doweling, or designed to accommodate on the order of approximately 0.5 inches of differential settlement between the new and existing concrete slab-on-grade. Alternatively, proposed foundation can be designed and constructed independently of existing adjacent slab improvements. 10) Existing recommendations for allowable soil bearing capacity, mm1mum footing embedment, and allowable increases in soil bearing capacity based on footing depth and dimensions provided in Sections 7.7.5, and 7.7.6 of the referenced update geotechnical report (Geocon, 2016) are considered appropriate and applicable for the proposed improvements. The allowable one-third increase in bearing capacity for transient loads is also considered appropriate and applicable and may be considered as a net total of dead plus live loads. 11) The estimated maximum total settlement of one inch and differential settlement of 0.75 inches ( over a span of approximately 40 feet) are considered appropriate and applicable for the proposed improvements, per Section 7. 7. 7 of the referenced update geotechnical report (Geocon, 2016). 12) New foundations should be offset a minimum of 15 lateral feet from existing foundations, where possible. Where new foundations must be placed within 15 feet lateral feet of existing foundations, the new footing depth should be such that an imaginary line drawn downward from the bottom nearest comer of the new footing (to existing footing) at a I :I (H: V) slope passes below the bottom of any nearby existing footing. Deepening of new footings is a suitable means for achieving this condition. 13)The recommendations provided in Sections 7.9.9 and 7.9.10 of the referenced update geotechnical report (Geocon, 2016), regarding passive earth pressure (300 pct) and coefficient of friction (0.40), are considered appropriate and applicable for new footings for the resistance of lateral loads on new foundations. The allowable lateral resistance can be taken as the sum of the frictional resistance and the passive resistance, provided the passive resistance does not exceed two-thirds of the total allowable resistance. The allowable passive pressure may be increased by one-third for short-duration, non-cyclical loading, which includes the effects of seismic forces. The allowable passive pressure may be used for the design of short caissons and poles. 14) Please see response to Item I 0. 15) The following requested dynamic soil parameters for the design of new foundations for vibrating equipment are provided. Additional parameters may be provided on request, provided the referenced geotechnical documentation or other generally accepted geotechnical documentation are considered appropriate. a. Poisson's ratio, u = 0.30 b. Unit weight of soil, y = 125 pcf c. Shear modulus, G = 2,000 psi e. Shear wave velocity Vs= 1,000 ft/s. 16) Prior to the placement of footing concrete and rebar, the upper 12 inches of soil beneath the footing should be overexcavated, moisturized to approximately two to three percent above optimum moisture, and compacted to a relative density of 95 percent in accordance with previous fill placement recommendations. If removal is not possible due to space constraints, then moisturizing and compacting the subgrade prior to concrete placement should still be performed.
