[NEC 706.15(B); 110.25] The disconnecting means can be integral to listed ESS equipment [NEC 706.15(A)] The disconnecting means must be readily accessible [NEC 706.15(A)(1)] Where circuits from the input or output terminals of energy storage components in an ESS pass through a wall, floor, or ceiling, a readily accessible disconnecting means shall be provided within sight of the energy storage component. Fused disconnecting means or circuit breakers shall be permitted to be used. [NEC 706.15(D); 706.31(F)] The disconnecting means must be within sight of the ESS or as close as practicable with a marking [NEC 706.15(A)(2)] The disconnecting means must be lockable open in accordance with 110.25 [NEC 706.15(A)(3)] For one-family and two-family dwellings, a disconnecting means or its remote control shall be located at a readily accessible location outside the building. [NEC 706.15(A)] The marking for the ESS must indicate whether it is open or closed and be permanently marked “ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM DISCONNECT.” The disconnecting means must be legibly marked with nominal ESS ac voltage, maximum ESS dc voltage. A heat detector, listed and interconnected to the smoke alarms, shall be installed in locations within dweling units and attached garages where smoke alarms cannot be installed based on their listing. 2021 International Residential Code.[R314, R315, R328.7] Energy Storage System SolarAPP+ Fire Bulletin Special Considerations ESS shall not be installed in sleeping rooms, or closets or spaces opening directly into sleeping rooms. [IRC R328.4] Aggregate energy ratings shall not exceed: 40kWh within utility closets, basements, and storage or utility spaces 80kWh in attached or detached garages and detached accessory structures 80kWh on exterior walls 80kWh outdoors on the ground 0kWh in habitable space [IRC R328.4,R328.5] When the ESS is installed in a location subject to vehicle damage it shall be protected by approved barriers. [IRC R328.8] ESS installed indoors that produce hydrogen or other flammable gases during charging shall be provided with either natural or mechanical ventilation in accordance with Section M1307.4.1 or M1307.4.2. [IRC R328.3.1] Individual ESS unit ratings shall not exceed 20kWh. [IRC R328.5] ESS shall be installed only in the following locations: 1. Detached garages and detached accessory structures. 2. Attached garages separated from the dwelling unit living space in accordance with the Code. 3. Outdoors or on the exterior side of exterior walls located not less than 3 feet (914 mm) from doors and windows directly entering the dwelling unit. 4. Enclosed utility closets, basements, storage or utility spaces within dwelling units with finished or noncombustible walls and ceilings. Walls and ceilings of unfinished wood-framed construction shall be provided with not less than 5/8 inch Type X gypsum wallboard. [IRC R328.4] Documentation and labeling A copy of the manufacturer's installation, operation, maintenance and decommissioning instructions shall be provided to the owner or placed in a conspicuous location near the ESS equipment. [IRC R328.11] A label on the installed system containing the contact information for the qualified maintenance and service providers. [IRC R328.11] Fire Classification SolarAPP+ Fire Bulletin PV System Rooftop-mounted PV systems shall have the same fire classification as the roof assembly required in 2021 International Residential Code. [R902.4; R324.4.2] Building-integrated photovoltaic products installed as the roof covering shall be tested, listed, and labeled for fire classification. [IRC R902.3, R324.5.2] Building-integrated photovoltaic products installed as the roof covering shall comply with the minimum requirements for fire classification set by the jurisdiction.
