REQUESTED ACTION: Support Carlsbad's current approach to striping bicycle facilities
BACKGROUND:
DATA:
The City of Carlsbad currently uses thermoplastic paint for some treatments of bicycle
facilities.
Staff has reviewed alternatives to the current approach to using thermoplastic paint on
bicycle facilities. Thermoplastic paint is typically limited to longitudinal striping that is
not expected to be crossed by bicyclists, except for special circumstances when the bike
lane is blocked. The thermoplastic paint does not have to be re-applied as frequently as
other paint options, and is therefore the preferred striping approach in terms of
maintenance. Staff recently decided to eliminate using thermoplastic paint for bike
legends in the bike lane because those where expected to be crossed by bicyclists on a
regular basis.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff is recommending no change to the current approach to using thermoplastic paint
for bicycle facilities.
