CALL TO ORDER: 4 p.m.
ROLL CALL: Sheffler, Moran, McBride, Waidelich, Laufer.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF CONCURRENT MEETINGS: None.
INVOCATION: None.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Chair Sheffler led the Pledge of Allegiance.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:

Motion by Trustee McBride seconded by Trustee Sheffler, to approve minutes as presented.
Motion carried, 3/0/2 (Moran, Laufer -Abstain).
PRESENTATIONS:
Deputy Library Director Katie Nye congratulated Trustee McBride on being appointed to another
term and introduced new Trustee Larry Laufer.

CONSENT CALENDAR: None.

DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS:
1. LIBRARY REPORTS FOR JUNE AND JULY 2024: Receive the Narrative Reports and Statistical
Reports for June and July 2024. (Staff contact: Sheila Crosby and Katie Nye, Library & Cultural
Arts)
Recommended Action: Receive the reports.
The board received the reports.
2. ELECT REPRESENTATIVE TO CARLSBAD LIBRARY & ARTS FOUNDATION:
Accept nominations/volunteers and elect a representative to the Carlsbad Library & Arts
Foundation for fiscal year 2024-25. (Staff contact: Sheila Crosby, Library & Cultural Arts
Department)

Recommended Action: Accept nominations/volunteers and elect a representative.
Motion by Trustee McBride, seconded by Trustee Sheffler to elect Trustee Waidelich as the
representative to the Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation for fiscal year 2024-25.
4/0/1 (Waidelich -Abstain).
3. GENEALOGY & CARLSBAD HISTORY: Receive a presentation on the Genealogy & Carlsbad
History division and the various services provided. (Staff contact: Kristi Bell, Library & Cultural
Arts Department)
Recommended Action: Receive the report.

4. QUARTERLY LIBRARY TECHNOLOGY REPORT: Receive the Quarterly Library Technology
Report. (Staff contact: Sheila Crosby, Library & Cultural Arts Department)
Recommended Action: Receive the report.
The board received the report.
Trustee Moran inquired how no charge printing is going. Principal Librarian Andrea Hilliard
answered she did not have specific data but printing and copying continues to be strong.
Trustee Moran asked about patron traffic analytics and where the library is in the process.
Principal Librarian Andrea Hilliard answered the team received vendor bids and the plan is to
pilot one of the solutions at both a library facility and a parks and recreation facility.
Trustee Moran inquired on the status of Link+. Principal Librarian Andrea Hilliard answered
the city has strong security and privacy requirements and are working with the vendor to
make sure all those requirements are met.
5. SEMI-ANNUAL DONATION REPORT: Receive the semi-annual donation report for the last six
months of fiscal year 2023-24. (Staff contact: Debbie Jo McCool, Library & Cultural Arts
Department)
Recommended Action: Receive the report.

6. NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY REPORT: Receive a report from the
North San Diego County Genealogical Society. (Staff contact: Sheila Crosby, Library & Cultural
Arts)
Recommended Action: Receive the report.

Representative Dunford-Branecki reported the society had a well-attended summer social; fall
seminar is Oct. 26 and will be online only; holiday luncheon is scheduled for December; upgrade
to the website; adding more local history to the monthly newsletter; in-person meeting
attendance has slowly been increasing; and the society is doing well while other genealogy
societies have closed.
TRUSTEE COMMENTARY AND REQUESTS FOR CONSIDERATION OF MATTERS: This portion of the
agenda is for the Board to make brief announcement, brief reports of their activities and request
for future agenda items.
Trustee Moran reported that the Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation board members are
interested in sponsoring more events around author talks and the re-opening of the Ruby G.
Schulman Auditorium. The foundation is fiscally strong.
DIRECTORS COMMENTS: Deputy Library Director Katie Nye commented on the following:
• Library recruitments
• TGIF Concerts in the Parks series ended in August
• Summer Reading Adventure program ended in August with over a million minutes read
• Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium upgrade
• Friends of the Carlsbad Library back to school sale
• Registrar of Voters mail ballot drop off boxes at library locations
• National Library Card Sign-up Month in September
