Executive Summary The board will review the library’s monthly narrative and statistical report for August 2024. This report provides a summary of work completed across all Carlsbad City Library locations as well as data and information about the services and programs provided for the community. Explanation & Analysis None. Fiscal Analysis No financial impact. Next Steps None. Environmental Evaluation This item does not require environmental review because it does not constitute a project within the meaning of the California Environmental Quality Act under California Public Resources Code Section 21065 in that it has no potential to cause either a direct physical change in the environment or a reasonably foreseeable indirect physical change in the environment. Exhibits 1.Narrative report for August 2024 2.Statistical report for August 2024 Sept. 25, 2024 Item #1 Page 1 of 6 LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES Staff Report Exhibit 1 Carlsbad City Library Monthly Library Report August 2024 Highlights: 1. Author Event Wilbur Ross, former U.S. Secretary of Commerce, spoke about his book “Risks and Returns: Creating Success in Business and Life” at an event at the Georgina Cole Library on Aug. 15. Twenty-five people attended the evening presentation. Audience members were able to pre-purchase the book and ask questions of Mr. Ross, who spoke about his education, his acquaintance with former President Donald Trump, and his experience as Secretary of Commerce. Librarians Ashleigh Hvinden and Liza Blue coordinated the well- received event. Programs: 2. Free Play in the Leichtag Room The Leichtag Room at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane now offers free play time. During non-programming times, the Leichtag Room in the Children’s area, provides rotating manipulatives and toys for children of all ages to enjoy and learn through play. The room has become very popular since the introduction of free play. 3. Teen Zine Making Passive Program On the second floor of the Dove Library Teen area, staff have set up supplies that teens can use to create their own zine. A zine is a small, handmade work, usually reproduced Sept. 25, 2024 Item #1 Page 2 of 6 using a photocopy machine and can include text, images or other artwork. Forty-five zines were made during the month of August. 4. Toddler Time at the Dove Library The number of children and their families who attend Toddler Time story time at the Dove Library has been consistently increasing since the library reopened after COVID-19. To effectively and safely accommodate the popularity of the program, Toddler Time has been moved from its previous location inside the Children’s library into the Gowland Meeting Room, and an additional Toddler Time program has been added to the schedule. Toddler Time at the Dove Library is held at 9:30 and 10:30 am. Library Assistant Kylee Seal and Library Technician Drew McAdams successfully presented the first double Toddler Time on Aug. 27. 5. Fix-it Clinic “San Diego Fix-it Clinic: Back to School Edition” was held in the Ann Kulchin Courtyard on Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Seventy-one people sought help repairing everyday household items, from music boxes to table fans to an heirloom waffle iron, in the process diverting 382 pounds from the landfill. The City of Carlsbad collected single-use plastic utensils to donate to Brother Benno’s nonprofit organization and city partner Republic Services hosted an information table. Attendees were able to create upcycled pencil holders from glass jars, tin cans and papier mâché. The next Fix-it Clinic, featuring a Halloween theme and an e-waste collection, will be held at the Cole Library on Oct. 19. 6. Read & Play Summer Club Wrap-Up Library Technician Jasmine Venancio organized a special summer book club at the Library Learning Center for children ages 8 to 10, called the "Read and Play Summer Club." Over the summer, the club members read and discussed three chapter books, explored the themes and messages within the books and how they related to the children's lives. On Aug. 6, Jasmine hosted a wrap-up party where each child received a free STEM activity, school supplies, two books to enrich their personal libraries, and an activity workbook based on their grade level. Summer Reading Adventure Teen Volunteer Recognition Librarian Ashleigh Hvinden and Library Assistant Christina Lorenzo wrapped up the Summer Reading Adventure Teen Volunteer Program with each of the three library locations hosting a Teen Certificate pick-up party. During the event teens who volunteered over the summer received a certificate and a treat as a thank you for helping staff this summer. 8. Literacy Takes a Fieldtrip Eight learners and two staff from Literacy Services ventured by train and trolley to San Diego Public Library in downtown San Diego. They met together with learners from Read San Diego. Attendees listened to two author talks and received a copy of the authors’ books. They participated in a Haiku writing workshop and an art project to be framed together to take home. A Carlsbad learner presented on the history of Haiku. Attendees were treated to a catered lunch while enjoying a panoramic view of the San Diego skyline on the top floor of the library. The project was supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Library. After learning how to use the train, two of the learners planned a train trip for a group of their friends to visit Channel Islands National Park. They had both read about Channel Islands National Park in the New Readers Book Club. One goal of literacy is for learners to gain confidence to fully participate in all the great opportunities of living here. Their experiences in the literacy program encouraged their confidence and curiosity. 9. Power of Words Literacy Services held a workshop for learners and tutors focusing on the power of words and goal setting. The workshop encouraged everyone to explore their own value and identities and included mindfulness, creative expression and writing. Some of the writings produced in the workshop will be included in an upcoming anthology collection compiled and published by the library. Services: 10. American Artist Appreciation Month in the Exploration HUB The Exploration HUB got into the spirit of celebrating American Artist Appreciation Month by staff creating displays that enhanced the creativity of the space and provided patrons with conversation starters to increase patron-to-patron interaction. Displays included a 3D printed banana, a failed 3D print and a wall display created with the Silhouette Cameo that included Children’s splatter paint art that was done at a theme- related Tinker Tuesday. Flicks at the Fountain Lead Librarian Darin Williamson rode the Books to Go book bike down to the Carlsbad Village Association’s screening of the movie Barbie on Aug. 1 as part of their Flicks at the Fountain summer series. Darin spoke with 86 attendees offering books, puzzles or seeds as he shared information about library programs and services. 12. TGIF Library & Cultural Arts Outreach The Library & Cultural Arts Department staff joined forces to share information about the department’s programs and services at TGIF Concerts in the Parks on Aug. 2, 9 and 16. Staff interacted with a total of 462 community members, passing out Cultural Arts STEAM activity books, fun goodies for kids and brochures for upcoming events. 13. Valley Middle School Registration Days Lead Librarian Darin Williamson, Library Assistant Christina Lorenzo and Library Technician Fanny Cruz-Hernandez participated in the Valley Middle School registration event on Aug. 12 -14. Over the course of three days, staff provided valuable information about the library's programs, services, and resources to families and school staff. Attendees had the opportunity to sign up for library cards and learn more about what the library offers. The event saw a total of 311 interactions. 14. Jefferson Elementary Open House Staff provided bilingual outreach support at Jefferson Elementary’s registration day on Aug. 20. Staff spoke with 266 parents and children, registered four new library cards and assisted six people with joining the mailing list. The event enabled the library to connect with administrators to set up library cards for the 6th grade class and host a future tour of the Cole Library in January 2025. 15. Farmer’s Market Lead Librarian Darin Williamson and Library Tech Yolanda Aubuchon attended the Carlsbad Village Farmers’ Market on Aug. 21. Darin spoke with a community member who chose a potty-training book at a Flicks at the Fountain event and was thrilled to report that his three-year-old now uses the potty every time. Staff spoke to 562 people about the programs the library offers, including our Summer Reading Adventure, the seed library, Libby and our State Parks Passes.
