Highlights:
1. Author Event
Wilbur Ross, former U.S. Secretary of Commerce, spoke about his book “Risks and
Returns: Creating Success in Business and Life” at an event at the Georgina Cole Library
on Aug. 15. Twenty-five people attended the evening presentation. Audience members
were able to pre-purchase the book and ask questions of Mr. Ross, who spoke about his
education, his acquaintance with former President Donald Trump, and his experience as
Secretary of Commerce. Librarians Ashleigh Hvinden and Liza Blue coordinated the well-
received event.
Programs:
2. Free Play in the Leichtag Room
The Leichtag Room at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane now offers free play time.
During non-programming times, the Leichtag Room in the Children’s area, provides
rotating manipulatives and toys for children of all ages to enjoy and learn through play.
The room has become very popular since the introduction of free play.
3. Teen Zine Making Passive Program
On the second floor of the Dove Library Teen area, staff have set up supplies that teens
can use to create their own zine. A zine is a small, handmade work, usually reproduced

using a photocopy machine and can include text, images or other artwork. Forty-five
zines were made during the month of August.
4. Toddler Time at the Dove Library
The number of children and their families who attend Toddler Time story time at the
Dove Library has been consistently increasing since the library reopened after COVID-19.
To effectively and safely accommodate the popularity of the program, Toddler Time has
been moved from its previous location inside the Children’s library into the Gowland
Meeting Room, and an additional Toddler Time program has been added to the
schedule. Toddler Time at the Dove Library is held at 9:30 and 10:30 am. Library
Assistant Kylee Seal and Library Technician Drew McAdams successfully presented the
first double Toddler Time on Aug. 27.
5. Fix-it Clinic
“San Diego Fix-it Clinic: Back to School Edition” was held in the Ann Kulchin Courtyard on
Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Seventy-one people sought help repairing everyday
household items, from music boxes to table fans to an heirloom waffle iron, in the
process diverting 382 pounds from the landfill. The City of Carlsbad collected single-use
plastic utensils to donate to Brother Benno’s nonprofit organization and city partner
Republic Services hosted an information table. Attendees were able to create upcycled
pencil holders from glass jars, tin cans and papier mâché. The next Fix-it Clinic, featuring
a Halloween theme and an e-waste collection, will be held at the Cole Library on Oct. 19.
6. Read & Play Summer Club Wrap-Up
Library Technician Jasmine Venancio organized a special summer book club at the
Library Learning Center for children ages 8 to 10, called the "Read and Play Summer
Club." Over the summer, the club members read and discussed three chapter books,
explored the themes and messages within the books and how they related to the
children's lives. On Aug. 6, Jasmine hosted a wrap-up party where each child received a
free STEM activity, school supplies, two books to enrich their personal libraries, and an
activity workbook based on their grade level.

Eight learners and two staff from Literacy Services ventured by train and trolley to San

Read San Diego. Attendees listened to two author talks and received a copy of the
authors’ books. They participated in a Haiku writing workshop and an art project to be
framed together to take home. A Carlsbad learner presented on the history of Haiku.
Attendees were treated to a catered lunch while enjoying a panoramic view of the San
Diego skyline on the top floor of the library. The project was supported by the U.S.
Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services
and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Library.
After learning how to use the train, two of the learners planned a train trip for a group
of their friends to visit Channel Islands National Park. They had both read about Channel
Islands National Park in the New Readers Book Club. One goal of literacy is for learners
to gain confidence to fully participate in all the great opportunities of living here. Their
experiences in the literacy program encouraged their confidence and curiosity.
9. Power of Words
Literacy Services held a workshop for learners and tutors focusing on the power of
words and goal setting. The workshop encouraged everyone to explore their own value
and identities and included mindfulness, creative expression and writing. Some of the
writings produced in the workshop will be included in an upcoming anthology collection
compiled and published by the library.
