Department Report on Senior Activities and Programs June 6, 2024 Item #1 Page 5 of 8 ( City of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation GENERAL ADULTS 50+ ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS DEPARTMENT REPORT June 6, 2024 Exhibit 1 Goal 1 & 2: Collaborations beyond the Senior Center & support the Age-Friendly Carlsbad Action Plan • On April 2, 2024, Jami Shapiro, a senior moving specialist, gave a presentation describing how to sell unwanted items online. • On April 4, 2024, seniors went on an excursion to Camp Pendleton to visit the Santa Margarita Ranch House and the Mechanized Museum. • On April 15, 2024, volunteer instructor Leigh Cohn held a hybrid lecture celebrating the 150th anniversary of Impressionism, which included an in-house decorated birthday cake. • On April 17 and 24, 2024, Mike McMahon, a volunteer technology instructor with 14 years of experience, led a step-by-step guide on how to use navigation applications on cellphones for over 60 seniors. • On April 23, 2024, volunteer instructor Leigh Cohn kicked off another 6-week painting session. The class was so popular that a second session was added on Wednesdays to accommodate the lengthy waitlist. • On April 25, 2024, seniors were educated on ways to reduce chronic stress in a presentation by Sherri Singleton, a senior care advisor. • On May 2, 2024, seniors went on an excursion to the Carlsbad Flower Fields and enjoyed lunch at the Windmill Food Hall afterwards. • On May 11, 2024, Senior Center instructors, including ceramics, needlecraft, and watercolor, advertised their classes and sold their artwork at the annual Hot Rods & Cool Treats event in Pine Avenue Community Park. • On May 20, 2024, Hearing Life conducted free screenings for hearing loss and provided a lecture on using smartphones with hearing aid devices. Goal 3 & 4: Increase social inclusion and enhance connectivity and minimize isolation • On April 8, 2024, Adrienne Nims serenaded the crowd with flute and saxophone music at the Concert in the Courtyard. • On April 18, 2024, the Senior Center continued its Broadway Series with a showing of Love Never Dies, the Phantom of the Opera sequel. • On April 19 and May 10, 2024, congregate lunch guests celebrated monthly birthdays and anniversaries with ice cream sandwiches. • On April 22, 2024, seniors learned the art of creating their own charcuterie boards in Creative Cuisine . In this monthly workshop, Senior Recreation Leader Tawny Slawson guides participants step-by-step through requested recipes! • On May 13, 2024, seniors enjoyed blues and classic rock by Ken Sprinkle at the Concert in the Courtyard. • May 15 and 16, 2024, the volunteer group Seaside Singers performed their Spring Concert, featuring hit tunes from the 1930's to the 1970's. ?TEI& ...,.,zmr::zm • On May 22, 2024, Aqua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation Discovery Center staff visited the Senior Center, providing an up-close encounter with a falcon and an owl and educating seniors about local wildlife. • On May 23, 2024, the Senior Center continued its Broadway Series with a showing of Cats, accompanied with snacks and iced tea. OTHER UPDATES Upcoming Programs • On June 7, 2024, Yin Yoga for Aging Gracefully, a senior focused intergenerational class, will kick off at Calavera Hills Community Park to expand senior programming. • On June 13, 2024, the Senior Excursion will visit the Front Porch Gallery in downtown Carlsbad. • On June 19, 2024, AAA is providing a Keeping the Keys workshop to help seniors stay safely on the road longer. Special Revenue Fund • Senior Center Special Revenue Fund budget/donations review ► Current balance for fund -$317,087 ► March 15, 2024-May 15, 2024 o DONATIONS: $2,435.00 -consists of Herbert Shad Living Trust donation for $2,000.00 and general donations. o MISC REVENUE: $6,117.00 -consists of Fitness Center drop-in fees, monthly memberships, quarterly memberships, and annual memberships. o Expenditures: $1,074.33 -consists of miscellaneous outside services and programming supplies.
