SUBJECT: Limited Soil Investigastion, King Garage, 4156 Highland Drive,
Carlsbad, California.
Dear Mr. King:
In accordance with your request, we have completed a limited soil
investigation at the subject site. The purpose of this investigation was
to determine if any f ill was present on this site and to provide an
allowable soil bearing pressure for foundation design.
The project site is a portion of the lot located at 4156 Highland Drive in
Carlsbad, California. At present the site consists of a partially
constructed garage north of and adjacent to the existing single family
residence. A steep slope, which is approximately 12 feet in height, is
located adjacent to the eastern boundry of the garage building pad while
the remainder of the surrounding site is relatively level. Vegetation on
the perimeter of the garage site consists of small fruit trees,
shrubbery and mature trees. Utilities, although present on the lot were
not located or observed.
The garage pad is founded on Quaternary terrace deposits and artifical
fill. The fill appears to underlie the northerly and easterly portions of
the concrete slab and is on the order of one to two feet in thickness.

Underlying the fill we observed the humid, medium dense to dense, reddish
brown silty sands of the terrace deposits.
On the eastern portion of the garage site, loose soils to a depth in excess
of 3.5 feet was encountered. This appeared to be in a area where the
adjacent slope has been eroded and subsequently filled prior to building
the garage pad.
In view of our findings, it is our opinion that the southwestern portion of
the garage is founded on firm native soil. The northerly and easterly
portions of the garage are founded on recent fill which apparently was not
tested to document that it was compacted to at least 90% of maximum dry
density. The + 3.5 feet of loose soil adjacent to the top of slope also
presents a possible settlement problem.
In this area, we recommend that the existing footings be underpinned as
shown on the attached Plate No. 1. The horizontal limits of this
underpinning should be verified in the field, during construction, by a
representative of this office. Provided this underpinning is as shown on
the attached plate and inspected by a representative of this firm, it is
our opinion that an allowable soil bearing pressure of 1500 psf may be used
for foundation design.
