Re: Case File 95-03
Dear David Rick,
Thank you for returning my call seeking information concern-
ing the variance applied for to allow a boat and trailer to be stored in the front yard at 4928 Loma Way, Carlsbad, California. It seems,
according to our conversation, that the variance notification was a
mere technicality, since the property in question will not allow the
owner to put the boat and trailer in their back yard without sub-
stantial modification to their home. Even so, I would like to express
a concern that allowing this kind of storage of boats, trailers, and
mobile homes (recreation vehicles) can create an unsightly effect
in a neighborhood that takes pride in its appearance, and, can in
fact, have adverse effects on property values in the neighborhood.
understand that I am basing my concern on the question of storage
of these items in the front yard of a home in general. If the
vehicles, boats, trailers were all in new and well-maintained
condition, it still would make for a cluttered effect visually.
Unfortunately, many times, as with the property across the street
and up two houses from me, the vehicles are older and have an
unkempt, lack of pride appearance, which does impact property
values. Having recently remodeled my home, I’d like to see the
neighborhood improve to protect my investment. I can do nothing
about neighbors who fail to maintain their lawn, landscaping and
side-yards in general, and probably nothing to prevent this var-
lance being granted, however, I would
silent as if I had no opinion on
I have not seen the boat nor trailer in question, so please
