HomeMy WebLinkAboutAV 97-04; GIA Fence Height; Administrative Variance (AV) (3)r- June 6,1997 - Mr. Gary S. Hill, G.G., FMA Director of Facilities Gemological Institute of America 5345 Armada Drive Carlsbad, California 92008 Dear Gary: Pursuant to our meeting of June 2, 1997, the following are my preliminary comments on the perimeter fencing plans for the GIA Campus facility. 1) We will need to review and approve the selected paint color. 2) Please provide a sample of the fence riser material for review and approval. It would also be helpful if you could direct us to an existing fence in the area similar in design and color to your proposed fence. 3) It will be necessary for us to approve the five foot encroachment of the fence in to the forty foot setback area near your truck dock. We will wait to receive the City's approval of this variance before taking action. 4) It would be prudent to verify whether the indicated riser spacing of 6" meets code. I am not sure about fencing, but on stair risers the maximum riser spacing is 4". Also, you might want to check with your liability insurer on this one. In general, we do not want to encourage the use of fences in the Project. However, due to GIA's unique security needs and its lack of immediately adjacent neighbors an exception would appear appropriate. When the City notifies nie that the plans are in substantial conformance with applicable City standards and ordinances, I will complete our review process and provide you with any additional items we might request.
