RE: Faraday Avenue Expanded Study Area
Dear Tim:
On November 11, 1998 I returned to the Faraday Avenue site in Carlsbad to examine additional
habitat adjacent to and east of the existing road alignment. Portions of this locale may serve as
staging and/or borrow areas for construction of Faraday Avenue. This area was mapped for
vegetation (included in Figure 1 of this letter report). No sensitive animals or plants were observed.
A plant list of all plant species observed is shown in Appendix 1 . Eleven species of regionally
common birds were observed; all were in limited numbers except a flock of Water Pipits (Anthus
rubescens) present in the agricultural areas. Chorus Frogs (Pseudacris regilld), two common lizard
species, and California Ground Squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyf) were the only other vertebrates
visually identified. Potential habitat for California Gnatcatchers (Polioptila californicd) is limited
to areas of sage scrub shown on Figure 1 .
Much of the flatter terrain in the valley is currently planted in Bell Peppers. One patch of fair quality
sage scrub is still extant southeast of the pepper field. To the north of the field is a minor ridgeline
with predominantly non-native grasses. Included here are some vestigial pieces of sage scrub of
relatively low quality, because the understory is primarily non-native weeds. Avoidance of the sage
scrub would limit potential additional impacts to less than biologically significant, within this
expanded study area, from the Faraday Avenue project . If you have any further questions please
call.
Sincerely,
Craig Reiser
