CHASE FIELD BATHROOMISNACK BAR PROJECT
This Capital Improvement project involves upgrading the Chase Field Special Use Park
Area by the construction of a new restroom/snack bar/storage facility.
Chase Field consists of a one-acre parcel, which has housed the Youth Baseball and
Softball activities for northern Carlsbad for the past 30-plus years. Volunteers originally
constructed the facility in the 1960s. Over the years the City has provided improvements
to this site, which have included new fencing and backstops, new bleachers, improved
landscaping, new dugout facilities and some minor park furnishings (trash receptacles
and picnic benches). Over 800 members of youth groups and their parents use the
three-baseball field complex. Local residents also use the facility for pick-up games.
The Assessors Parcel number for this property is 204-193-01.
The older restroom/snack bar facility, built by volunteers and then improved in the 1980s
by City funding, is in dire need of replacement. The bathrooms are in poor condition and
suffer from poor drainage and air circulation. The snack bar portion is overly crowded
into a small space. There is inadequate storage for Parks Maintenance materials and
for the Youth Groups' needs. This project would remedy these problems by constructing
a new, high quality building to address these needs.
The building proposed would occupy 2,692 square feet, which includes a second story to
be used for an announcers area, and for storage. The second floor would also be used
for a meeting place for the youth group's board of directors, and various other
committees. The enlarged building is necessary to meet the demands of the many
users of this facility.
Other newly proposed additions to this facility are two batting cages installed in the
outfield of the northern field. These batting cages will be constructed of chain link and
will be separated from the playing fields by fencing on both sides. They will be located
on the north side of the property, away from all residences, and would be used during
usual daylight hours.
This site is used year round by different community groups. Carlsbad Youth Baseball
has its annual summer program, which begins in February and extends through July. In
August the Carlsbad Pop Warner programs begins using the facility and it goes nightly
until November. In the Fall/Winter Carlsbad Youth Baseball uses the facility for its Fall
League, practicing on the fields on Saturdays/Holidays, and playing games on Sundays.
During the weekdays students from La Palma Continuation High School often use this
site for its physical education activities.
The park area includes lighting that operates nightly, usually until 10:00 pm, except
Sundays, from March through July, and then again Monday to Friday until approximately
8:30 pm from September to November.
The planned improvements would be a very desirable improvement to this complex.
