ELIZABETH SETON CATHOLIC CHURCH Recently, the Planning Department received a complaint in regards to the chiming of the church bells hourly until 9:00 p.m. A letter, (which is attached for your convenience) was written to Mr. Bill Behun at Dominy & Associates Architects on August 24, 1994, addressing an inquiry in regards to a carillon chime speaker. The correspondence stated that staff believed that the ringing of chimes for special celebrations only (weddings, mass, and funerals) could be allowed without formally amending the Conditional Use Permit (CUP). It was advised that if the chimes were sounded for special celebrations, then the noise volume range would be restricted to 300 feet. However, the frequent sounding of chimes at other times throughout the day would not be allowed unless the CUP is amended since there was not an environmental review for noise impacts. Furthermore, if there were any complaints in regards to the chimes, the CUP could then be opened for consideration again since the chimes were not considered with the CUP. If you would like to propose to have the chimes sound hourly then please apply for an amendment to the CUP. If not, please limit the ringing of the chimes for special celebrations only.
