Olinghouse Planning Director City of Carlsbad 2960 Pi0 Pic0 Drive Carlsbad, California 92008 Dear Mr. Olinghouse: The Trustees of the Carlsbad Union School District wish to thank you for sending the notice of a public hearing to be held June 25, 1968 to consider an application to allow the construction and use of a U. S . Post Office Building and parking facilities northerly of Chestnut Avenue betwen Harding Street and Interstate 5 Freeway. The school board wishes to express objection to a post office in said location because of the increased vehicular traffic that, undoubtedly, would be generated. Since the proposed location of the post office is across Harding Street from the Pine School, increased traffic would be a hazard to school children who live in the immediate vicinity and walk between home and school at various times during days that school is in session. Harding Street would be the only access to the proposed post office from either north or south. In addition, residents along Tamarack Avenue would have access to Harding Street and the post office only by way of Jefferson Street, which is the only through street to the north between Interstate 5 and the railroad tracks. Traffic along this route would increase hazards to kindergarten and primary children at Jefferson School as well as to older children at Pine School. There appears to be little possibility that Chestnut Avenue could become an east-west access route to the proposed post office. Chestnut Avenue west of Harding was purchased by the Carlsbad Union School District and abandoned by the City of Carlsbad in 1957. ADMINISTRATION OFFICE 729-11 91 .- Elton J. Olinghouse 2 June 25, 1968 Increased traffic hazards to school children resulting from increased vehicular traffic in a location with limited access is the reason for objection to the proposed post office location. Very truly yours, CARLSBAD UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF TRUSTEES Howard C. Harmon Secretary HCH: dh
