CUP 858 - PILGRIM CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH
The following is a description of the homeless shelter program
in which Pilgrim Congregational Church participates:
The Homeless Shelter Program is a county-wide program
officially sponsored by San Diego Mayor Maureen O’Conner. People
helped by the program are screened and placed by the Ecumenical Service Center. No alcohol, drugs or weapons are permitted. All of those placed at Pilgrim Church are families, i.e. mothers and fathers with their children.
The average number of persons in the program is approximately
6 to 10 and often varies from day to day. Under the rules, people
must be in the church by 6:OO p.m. each evening and out of the
church by 8:OO a.m. each morning except for Sunday. Those in the
program are chaperoned by two adult members from our church at all
times while they are at the church. They are given bus passes when
they leave the church so that they may get to social services
appointments, job interviews, the mall or other places that they
may need to go.
Those in the program will be able to make themselves a cold breakfast each morning and will be given a sack lunch to take with them when they leave for the day. Hot evening meals will be brought in by Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church.
The dates for this year’s program are approximately December
15, 1991 to January 11, 1992. Our church has volunteered to do this because no other north county church was willing to house homeless people during Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Pilgrim Congregational Church has been doing the homeless
program now for at least four years and has never had a problem or complaint. We are sensitive to potential problems that may occur if people "hung around" the church during the day because of our own day care center. Therefore our own church members closely supervise the program.
