Mr. Bill Compas
Planning Commission
City of Carlsbad
2075 Las Palmas Drive
Carlsbad, Ca 92009
Dear Mr. Compas,
I write to you as a working mother and a concerned citizen of Carlsbad. My five year old son,
Alexander, has attended Pilgrim Children’s Center since he was two and a half years old. We found
Pilgrim after a frustrating search and much trial and error with other day care centers. Pilgrim is a gem in
a pile of rubble and every day I leave Alex with the highly talented, concerned and compassionate people
at Pilgrim, I thank the Lord they are there.
When I heard about the trouble that one of the adjacent neighbors is causing for Pilgrim I decided to do
what I could to help turn the tide in our favor. I say “our” favor meaning myself and the other parents
and children that may be so fortunate to become future members of the Pilgrim family.
There is, as a matter of fact, a past Pilgrim family - who are friends -- whose backyard also abuts the
Pilgrim play yard. I have never heard them complain of disturbances either during the day or at night.
Every citizen has a right to quiet enjoyment of their property. But Pilgrim has been in it’s present
location for 23 years - it’s doubtful that children are any noisier this year than they have been in the
previous 22 -- why is it just now that someone is complaining?
When a person buys property and there are disclosures or obvious extenuating circumstances concerning
the property, he signs the contract in full acknowledgment and acceptance of those circumstances, or he
doesn’t sign.
When neighbors have issues, generally outside parties become involved only after every effort has been
exhausted by the neighbors to solve the matter between themselves. I understand that Mr. Vallely has
never even met with the Pilgrim representatives to try to resolve the matter.
If Mr. Vallely’s agenda involves Pilgrim building a wall, you should know that every available cent is
precious to the chi.ldren of ,the center. There are no extra pennies. The Darents and staff raise money for.
“extras” such as books. craft materials and field trim bv donating Dersonal time to fundraising. If Mr.
Vallely’s goal is to have a wal1,built for him, he should know that we will be out there selling baked
goods, T-shirts, Tupperware and used “stuff” to buy it for him.
If his agenda involves Pilgrim losing it’s flexibility or hours or it’s lease, well then, we all lose -- mostly
the children.
Please do the right thing.
