Subject: 6441 Topmast Drive - Amy Ma Family Day Care
Dear Chris,
Here is the summary of services in addition to what I submitted to my
application for the large family day care permit.
I have been teaching for more than 10 years and have 3 children (12,10, 4
yos). We moved to San Diego two years ago. I had successful managed my
family day care in Los Angeles county for 8 years. After we moved here, the
first thing I looked for is schooling for my children. My 3 yo was ready for
preschool and I couldn't find one that would meet my expectations in terms
of balancing all areas of development. My husband and I were then inspired
by local family friends and we opened our family day care again in September
2006.
Brilliant Kids Montessori is a family day care home with enriched Montessori
curriculum targeted to ages from 1.5 - 6 years old. There are many day care
in the community but none has a great curriculum that will help children
develop and explore fully in all areas. Montessori curriculum offers 5 major
areas that can help children in early childhood development - practical
life, sensorial, math, language, arts/culture/music. As an educator and a
day care provider, I stressed both loving care and development in all areas
in my child care facility. Many families are attracted to it because it's
unique and provides great value to our community.
Montessori philosophy emphasizes on child-led approach, respects that every
child is unique, and has his/her own development and learning pace. With Dr.
Montessori's theories surrounding the absorbent mind and the sensitive
periods of early childhood development, the preschool years, especially, are
a period of intense learning and astonishing intellectual and physical
development. It's a time when the brain's plasticity is at high level, an
optimum period for dendritic growth. Between the ages of 2 and 3, a child's
vocabulary expands to around 900 words. At around the age of 3, children
begin to develop self-awareness, a sense of their own identity as well as
the identity of others. By now, their vocabulary will exceed 1500 words,
their understanding of grammar will be much improved, and their imaginations
will go into overdrive. At the age of five, children, on average, know 2500
words or more, have an improved understanding of the rules of syntax and
grammar, have developed a sense of right and wrong, and are capable of
computing advanced mathematical operations.
The brain's growth spurt in this area ends at 10 years of age, after which
knowledge, language, and skill acquisition require much more effort. The
implications of this research reaffirm the importance of education during
the preschool years. Providing children with a rich and supportive
environment during their preschool years can bestow upon them considerable
benefits that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. The above
is part of the reasons why I incorporated a curriculum in my family day care
because I truly believe that a childcare provider needs to provide an active
role in enriching the development of the preschool-aged children.
My family day care operates Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 am -

3: 30 pm. I do understand the amount of traffic that may bring to the
neighborhood, so I only operate 3 days per week and will keep it this way.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, families participate in field trips to museums,
parks, beaches, off-site enrichment classes.
I also had previous discussion with the HOA president in regards in easing
the parking situation. For parents who would like to park and drop off,
they're advised to park at Spar Court where there're are no properties on
one side of the street. This way, we are not interfering with our neighbors.
My driveways and the parking spaces in front of my house are open for
expecting mothers and parents with younger siblings that require ease of
pick up/drop up.
Please let me know if you need more information, thank you.
Warmly,
Amy

"Our aim is not only to make the child
