The literature review identlfied no previously recorded sites within the project area. However, the field survey produced surface artifacts and shell identifying a prehistoric site. To determine site significance, testing was conducted. Testing included the collection of surface artifacts, excavation of shovel test pits (STPs) and excavation of two 1x1 meter units (see attached figure). This work provided the necessary information to identify site size, depth, content, integrity and potential to address important research questions. The fieldwork produced a light amount of mano fragments, debitage and shell. The STPs and 1x1 m units were excavated from a minimum of 20 to 50 cm depending on presence of darkened soil, artifacts and/or shell. Subsurface excavation was stopped when the underlying sandstone was encountered. On the basis of the subsurface excavation results, the site is identified as not important under CEQA criteria. A complete report of finding providing all neceSSary maps, artifact counts by unit, shell speciation and recommendations will be provided within three weeks.
