RE: Paleontological Resources - La Costa Products International/ Newton Business
Center
Dear Ms. Hysong:
This letter is a summary of my findings concerning the paleontological resource
potential of the above referenced project. I conducted a field walkover of the project site
on 21 May 1998. The site is heavily vegetated and there are limited exposures of
bedrock. Fortunately, the geotechnical report (GeoSoils, Inc., 1997) gives a good
summary of the site geology. In addition, a cut slope on the northern border ofthe site
provides an excellent exposure of the bedrock geology in the area.
siltstones, and mudstones) ofthe Santiago Formation of middle Eocene age
(approximately 42-45 million years old). Scattered fossil shells of Eocene oysters
discovered weathering out of the Santiago Formation in the northeastern portion of the
project site, serve as an indication of the paleontological resource potenrial of the site.
This discovery indicates the need for implementation of a paleontological resource
mitigation program during grading of the project site. Such a program should include
excavation monitoring, fossil salvage, fossil preparation, fossil curation, and summary
reporting.
It is clear that the project site is underlain by sedimentary rocks (sandstones,
