Testing was ncccssary to ddermine site importance under (TEQA and City of Carlsbad criteria, as development of a mion of I his site ( lox50 meters) was proposed. Develqment was necessary to build a crihwall to support the ridge cut, alcmg the west side of the Newton property. Previous work by Malcolm Rogm identified a shallow dqsit to 30 crn with dle hearths, mctates, manos and San Di~guih implmcnls. Rogm nvtd agicrrltural disturbance and rcponcd that the farmcr (Charles Kelly) in 1916 "plwwcxi out a burial". Previous work in t.he IY7Os removed over 50% of the ridge knoll (Figurc 1-3). Testing includcd surface collection of artifacrs, excavation of six shovel test pits (S'I'YS), and excavation of four I x 1 meter units (set: Figure 1-3 for Area Tested). The STPs identified the cultural deposit along thc southcast portion, of thc rcmaining portion of CA- SD1-Y I I$. For the most part the cultwal deposit was shallow (30 cm/l2 inch depth) and had been disturbed through agricultural activities. The amount of cultural material (artifacts and ecofacts) was somewhat low bur rcprcscntcd a mngc of activities identifying milling of plant sds, cooking, pnx;essing of shellfish and tool prududion and maintenance. Given the shallow nature of the site, low number of art.ifac1.s and site disturbance, that portion of site CA-SDI-91 15 tested is identified as under Ci1.y of Carlhd Guidclinm and CEQA criteria. No mitigation measurea are required for sites identified as tlot i~mant, Howcver, @vcn thc previously rcported burial, monitoring of grading by an archaeologist is recommended. Presently, Gallegos & Associaks has mrnpletai all ficldwnrk and will complete the cataloguing of artifacts and repon of finding within the next 45 days.
