January 8, 1998 Newport National Corporation 5050 Avenida Encinas, Suite 350 Carlsbad, California 92008 Attention: Mr. John Couvillion Subject: CORNERSTONE CORPORATE CENTER PALOMAR AIRPORT ROAD CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA GEOGRID SLOPE REINFORCEMENT Dear Mr. Couvillion: In accordance with the request of Ms. Mary Miller of Ninteman Construction, we have reviewed the revised stability calculations prepared by Stable Earth Systems for the Geogrid-reinforced slope along the south side of the project. The revised calculations, which were transmitted to us by facsimile from Ms. Miller on December 4, 1997, were performed to determine whether the vertical spacing of the Geogrid layers could be increased while still maintaining a factor of safety of 1.5 against deep-seated failure of the slope. Our review of the calculations indicate that the spacings indicated on the attached cross section result in a factor of safety of 1.5 for gross stability. It is our opinion that the revised spacing of the Geogrid is satisfactory, assuming that strength parameters for the Geogrid material specified in the design is the same as that used in construction. If you have any questions or if we may be of further service, please call. Very truly yours, Geocon Incorporated hJ85q- Michael S.
