PROJECT DESCRIPTION/EXPLANATION
PROJECT NAME: PLAZA CAMINO REAL BUS TURNOUT
APPLICANT NAME: NORTH COUNTY TRANSIT DISTRICT
Please describe fully the proposed project. Include any details necessary to adequately
explain the scope arc/or operation of the proposed project. You may also include any
background information and supporting statements regarding the reasons for, or
appropriateness of, the application. Use an addendum sheet if necessary.
Description/Explanation.
The Plaza Camino Real Bus Turnout project is a proposal to remodel and expand the
present bus transit facility located in the south parking lot of Plaza Camino
Real, near Robinsons-May store.
NCTD's Transit System depends on major transfer points, such as the Mall, to
facilitate cross-regional travel in North County. Transfers are accommodated
by scheduling several different routes to meet each hour at one location,
minimizing waiting time and improving the attractiveness of public transit as
an alternative to the single occupant automobile. Plaza Camino Real itself is
also a major destination in North County, and is well-served by transit.
Presently, NCTD has the capacity for only five (5) buses at a time, in a
crowded area, and the buses must travel thru a large section of the parking lot.
The proposed modification/revision will allow NCTD to be able to have eight (8)
buses at a time, in a safer and cleaner environment, eliminating traveling thru
the parking lot and improving accessibility for the public.
The proposed modification/revision will eliminate a total of 21 vehicle parking
spaces; however, it is felt that the improved services being provided will
compensate for the loss. It should also be noted that the Mall's recent parking
lot restripe created far more spaces than will be lost through this project.
In fact, the restripe plan was approved contingent on the Mall cooperating with
NCTD in the expansion of the Transit Center.
This project has the support of NCTD, Plaza Camino Real's management (CenterMark
Properties), and all the Major stores. This project was previously submitted
in 1990 and was unanimously approved by the Carlsbad Planning Commission on
February 20, 1991.
