RE: PS 02-76 - VIGILUCCI’S SIGNS
Dear Mr. Gelbman:
Planning staff has reviewed your proposal to install monument, wall, and awning signs at 3878
Carlsbad Boulevard. Our comments follow.
Monument Sign
1. The monument sign is proposed in the public right of way. Commercial signs cannot be
located in the right of way per Zoning Ordinance Section 21.41.030 (19).
2. Relocating the monument sign out of the right of way and onto private property could be a
possibility. Because it may affect parking opportunities for the restaurant, a proposal to
relocate the sign out of the right of way should be considered as part of the review of the
pending conditional use permit application for Vigilucci’s restaurant.
Awning and Awning Sign
3. Recently prepared site plans for the Vigilucci property show the front of the restaurant is
about a foot from the right of way boundary along Carlsbad Boulevard. Therefore, installation
of the proposed awning sign would not be permitted based on the Zoning Ordinance Section
cited above. The remainder of the proposed awning would require an encroachment permit;
however, the City will consider the merits of allowing the awning to encroach only as part of
the CUP.
4. An awning along Carlsbad Boulevard will need to be setback a certain distance from the
north property line of the Vigilucci property. Please contact the Building Department at (760)
602-2719 for details.
Please let me know how you wish to proceed with your sign application. Staff can amend the
application to approve only the two wall signs proposed.
