SITE PLAN REQUIREMENT FOR POLE, MONUMENT, AND FREESTANDING SIGN
APPLICATIONS
The following example illustrates the information that is required for all pole, monument, and
freestanding sign permit applications. Prior to approval, all such proposed signs must be reviewed
for potential issues by the Traffic Engineering Department, which will not allow signs to be
approved over the counter. Additional time will be required for on-site inspection.

Relationship to Streets: Signs shall be designed and located so as not to interfere with the
unobstructed clear view of the public right-of-way and nearby traffic regulatory signs of any
pedestrian, bicyclist or motor vehicle driver.
Sight Distance: No sign or sign structure shall be placed or constructed so that it impairs the sight

Sign Project Installation Notes:
1) Surveyor shall coordinate with utility to precisely stake utility easement on both sides of road.
Landscape contractor shall install silt fencing around entire downhill perimeter of work zone,
and install fiber rolls along entire sidewalk edge of work zone.
Sign contractor shall demo and grub out all remaining plants in the work area.
Landscape contractor shall demo all irrigation in the work zone except for equipment to
remain undisturbed (as per Faraday West Landscape Improvements, Planning Systems,
3-12-10).
Sign contractor shall install vinyl sign outside ofthe R.O.W. and as per the plans. Point of
beginning shall be 233 ft. from BOC at College and Palomar Point.
Once Architect has provided approval to proceed. Surveyor (under separate contract) shall
stake sign corners and the mow curb locations. Sign shall be located outside of R.O.W.
Sign Pad - Contractor shall cut and fill to create a level sign pad that extends from 12" to 18"
around sign perimeter. A bench that slopes at approximately 5% shall also be created that
trends along the R.O.W. from north to south along the length of the graded area. Compact
to 90%. Graded area is approx. 2000 s.f. in size.
West Side Planting Bed - Contractor shall cut and fill to create a sloping planting bed with a
3:1 slope at the rear edge ofthe common maintenance area. Compact to 90%. Graded
area is approx. 1900 s.f. in size.
Surveyor shall spot check aii grading and assist Sign contractor in creating a slope grade
does not exceed 2:1, that turf grading does not exceed 3:1.
Sign contractor shall excavate and compact soil beneath footing per industry standards.
Sign contractor shall install permanent monument sign per Carlsbad Research Center
Monument Sign, by Stuart White Design, dated 04-25-05, except as amended by this plan.
Landscape contractor shall install new irrigation, and completely replant and re-mulch all
areas disturbed by project as per the Faraday West Landscape Improv^
Systems, 3-12-10.

Tha Contractor shall be responsible for tlie quality of all materials and
u'Orkmanship required for the execution of this contract including the nnaterials
and workmanship of any firms or individuals who acc as his subcontractors.
Contractor shall ba responsible for providing Stuan White Design, further referred
to as Designei; with as-bullt drawings and specifications if fabrication methods are
different from v^hat appears in these drawings.The Contractor shall verify and be
responsible for all dimensions and conditions shown by these dravi,'ings.Shop
di-avilngs for any details not appearing in these plans must be submitted to the
Designer for approval before proceeding with febricatlon.The Designer shall be
notified of any discrepancies in the drawings, in field dimensions or conditions
and/or changes required in construction details.
Location of Signs
Tl'.e locations shown on the plan drawings are generally accurate, but may be open
'o some Interpretation. If any questions arise regarding sign locatior\,the fabricator
Is to arrange a ineeting with the Designer at the site for final location of sign
elements.
Scafjs
Provide all labor and materials necessary Co fabricacei paint and install all signs
shovi/n on the Designer's drawings and/or Graphics Schedule attached.
Permits
Contractor shall obtain and pay for all permits required for execution ofthe work.
This Includes building and structural permits necessary to buitd monument and
self standing signs.
Labeling
Loca tion on the sign of all required labeling {i.a, city sign permit) shall be approved
by Designer prior to application to any Item.
Project logo
Copy shown on the drawings shall be used as a general layout guide to determine
proportional she of logo, and location to be pinned to aluminum sign cabinet
Logo to be provided In a digital forma r by designer for fabrication use. No
substitutions will be accepted.
Concrete Footing Si Forms
Contractor to provide structural engineering for all support and footings as
required. Footing to accept aluminum cabinet flush to footing edge. Footing to be
'iibove level soil line. Footing and forms must be built to accept granite tile with
1 fiastic, and not to exceed specified dimensions of sign as described in drawings.
Any engineering details which affect appearance must be approved by Designer.
'i/Vatsr Jet Cut-Out Aluminum Letters
Computer cut system to be used, aluminum faces and returns to be free of any .
blemishes, obtaining a smooth finish.
Granite Tile
12"x 12" "Elba Brown*granite tile to be used as specified by designer.Granite
shinned to masonry form with exterior grade mastic and grout.Cornertjolnts on
top and returns (Not Faces) of uprights.Only cut tiles to be placed on bottom of
form to extend to soil line at 4"height mark. Ail concrete sur^ces (except under
aluminum cabinet) to be skinned with full I2"x 12" tiles. All Joints.between cabinet,
aluminum shelf, and tiles will be filled with commercial gracie silicone.
Shop Drawings
Details of exposed edges, joints between materials snd details which effect the
appearance shall be provided to Designer for approval before fabrication. Indicate
the gauge or dimension ofall components on the shop drawings.
Sign Requirements - JVlaterials
As a general requirement, the Contractor shall submit samples of all materials to be
used prior to fabrication, induding actual colors and finishes specified
Adhesives
All adhesives shall be used in accordance with recommendations made by the
manufacturer of the material specified to be laminated or adhered. No adhesives
that will fad^ discolor or delaminate as a result of proximity to sunlight or heat
therefrom shall be used and shall not change the color of or deteriorate the
materials to which they are to be appl!ed.The adhesives shall be of a non-staining,
non-yellowing quality and ali visible Joints shall be free from air bubbles and other
defects.
Sign Fabrication and installation
General: All work under this contract shall be performed by skilled craftsmen under
the supervision of trained foremea experienced in the trade or craft required to
accomplish the work and produce a product of high quality.The Contraaor shall
guarantee all materials and workmanship for one year after the date of acceptance
ofthe work by the Designer and the Owners.
Graphics and/or sign colors shall be as shown on the drawings. Sign finish for
exterior signs shall be Mathews Paint, satin finish, submit sample. Sign finish shall
be smooth, free of scratches, gouges, air bubbles, bulging, foreign matter and other
imperfections.
All exposed corners and edges shall be finished flush and smooth. If silicone
adhesive is used for Installation of sign items shall be General Electric Contraaor's
Silicone Sealant SCS 100 (dear), or equal.Studs on the back of sign panels to be
blind stud welded with no warping or defacement of any kind appearing on the
face of panel or using a threaded rod into threaded hole on back side of aluminum.
Any alternate method of attachment must be approved by the Designer prior to
fabrication.
Seams and joints: Welded joints shall be ground, filled and finished flush and
smooth wjth adjacent work. Such seams and spot-welded joints shall not be visible
on exterior of signs after final finish has been applied. No gaps, light leaks, waves or
oil canning will be permitted in tha work. Unless noted otherwise,all exposed
joints between sign components shall be butted
flush, or at 90°.
Fasteners for Aluminum; Most fasteners are called out on the documents. Any
substitutions or alterations must be submitted and approved by the designer.
Connection of Sign fo Footing: Inner support pipe or rod reinfordng member shall
be painted with rustoleum (or equal) rust resistant paint and sec directly into
concrete.
Cleaning and Protection: At completion of installation, clean all surfaces in
accordance with finish manufacturer's instruction. Protect units from damage until
acceptance by the Owner.Repair or replace damaged units as directed by the
Designer. Apply final coatof liquid automotive wax if required.This should be
repeated yearly as a maintenance item (by the Ownersj.The Contractor shall
provide to the client written instructions and schedule for the proper maintenance
ofall items, in a bound manual form, including guarantee, warranties and complete
maintenance instructions, four copies required.
Contractor shall provide "As-Built Drawings' to the Owner at the completion of
Installation. ;
Painting and Finishing
General: All paint and finish materials induding primers, shall ba the finest quality
obtainable.
Surface Preparation: Preparation and primers shall be as recommended by the
manufaaurer ofthe finish materials. All metal surfaces, including areas within signs
shall be properly primed and painted fill paint materials shall be applied according
to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Paint Colors and Finish SampIesiSubmii 6"x 8"color and finish samples in duplicate
to the Designer for approval prior to painting. Paint finishes shall be satin finish
except as noted otherwise on the drawings.
Except as spedfied above, paint for wood or metal supports and other surfaces
shall be as manufactured by Matthews Paint Company, and as recommended for
che specific surface by the manufacturer.Method of application used shall be as
required to achieve a final coat'which is uniform in color, finish, texture, and
coverage.
All ideas, designs, arrangements, and plans indicated or represented by ait drawings in
this set are owned by and are property of Stuart White Design, and were created and
developed for use on and in connection with the specific project. None of such ideas,
designs, arrangements or plans shall be used ar disclosed to any person, firm, or
corporation for any purpose whatsoever without the written permission of Stuart
White Design. Written dimensions on these drawings sball have precedence over scaled
coiiditions on the Job and Stuan White Deslgt) must be notified of any variations ofthe
dimensions and conditions shown by these drawings.Shop details must be submitted
to Stuan White Design for approval prior to fabrication.
NOTE:
These drawings are intended to convey design intent only. Final engineering,
materials and fabrication shall remain the responsibility of the fabricator to
Insure quality fit and finish for all components
