Prior to approval, all such proposed signs must be reviewed for potential issues by the Transportation Department, which will not allow signs to be approved over the counter. Sign Program Review Dear Mr. Gao, The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) of the Carlsbad Research Center (CRC) has completed its review of the sign program submitted for facilities at 5923 Balfour Court, 5922 and 5928 Farnsworth Court. The sign program proposes a total of four monument signs (two monument and two smaller directional signs) distributed adjacent to the three buildings as described on the table below. Sign Type and Location Sign Size 5923 Balfour Court -Directional Sign (Building A) -NEW 6.0 ft X 1.25 ft (Near East entry driveway on Balfour Court) (7.5 sq. ft.) 5922 Farnsworth Court -Main Monument Sign (Building B) -NEW 10.83 ft. X 3.0 ft. (Near entry driveway on Rutherford Road) (32.5 sq. ft.) -Directional Sign (Building B) -NEW 6.0 ft X 1.25 ft. (Near West entry driveway on Farnsworth Court) (7.5 sq. ft.) 5928 Farnsworth Court -Monument Sign (Building C) -EXISTING 10.875 ft X 3.0 ft (Near entry driveway on Farnsworth Court) (32.63 so. ft.) The dimensions, lettering heights and general sign locations are consistent with the Design Guidelines of the CRC. However, there are a few items/recommendations that the ARC would like to point out: 1. Please be aware that there is regularly scheduled maintenance that the CRC landscape contractor provides to the turf areas where the proposed signs will be located. Weed whipping of the turf along the base of your signs may cause damage over time. The ARC recommends that a 6 inch to 12 inch mow curb be placed around the base of the sign. This will keep weed whipping activity away from your signs. 2. Also, be aware that regular irrigation also occurs in the turf areas. The constant wetting of your signs over time may cause damage or deterioration. Any maintenance, upkeep or repairs to the signs will be the responsibility of Carlsbad Technology, Inc. and not the CRC. 3. Although the proposed sign locations are generally acceptable, make sure that at the time of installation, no sign excessively interferes with the operation of any of the existing CRC irrigation sprinkler heads. Any of the signs may be moved to accommodate the proper operation of the irrigation sprinkler heads, as long as they stay near the general vicinity of the proposed locations. If you need assistance in locating the sprinklers in any area, you can contact Mrs. Andrea Tagle with Meissner Jacquet so that she can set up a meeting in the field with the CRC's landscape contractor. 5. In addition to the irrigation sprinkler heads issue, the current proposed location for the 'Main Monument Sign' may also have to be adjusted to make sure the sign does not interfere with the line of sight of vehicles exiting from your property onto Rutherford Road. The sign may have to be moved either further away from the driveway, closer to the parking area, or both. The City of Carlsbad will be able to assist you with this when you apply for your sign permits. The proposed sign program is consistent with the CRC Design Guidelines and therefore the submitted plans are considered APPROVED, as long as the sign location issues are addressed before final installation. You may proceed with the construction and installation of your signs once sign permits are obtained from the City of Carlsbad.
