Dear Mike:
RESTAURANTS
As I'm sure you are aware, the Caltrans construction project on Palomar Airport Road
and the freeway ramps has been causing a considerable amount of distress for the
area businesses immediately affected by the closure of these freeway ramps. Our
own operation suffers at least a 25% drop in business on days the ramps are closed
and we have heard from other business that their receipts are off as much as 50% on
these days.
Of course, we all recognize the need for this construction project, and welcome the
benefits the finished product will provide us. However, getting to that September,
1993 estimated completion date will turn out to be a struggle for many of us. If
our customers can't get to us, or at least have some kind of notion of a detour route
they may reach us, we simply won't get those customers.
We respectfully ask the City to provide us with a temporary permit to erect signage
that will allow us to advise our customers how to get to us during this period the
freeway ramps are closed. For example, we would like to have a temporary sign or
banner that would read something to the effect of "Take Cannon Exit, Turn Right On
Paseo del Norte" . We are requesting the following signs to be temporarily installed:
1.
2.
3.
Wood sign next to our freeway-facing sign (or attached to it).
Banner to hang from the windmill balcony.
Banner to hang from hotel building.

Mike, we are only requesting this signage to be placed on a temporary basis only
while the freeway ramp project is continuing. Of course, we will immediately remove
all temporary signage once the freeway ramp is placed back in service. We have been
losing significant revenues, as well as the City’s share of tax revenues, since these
ramps have been closed, and we’re looking for a mutually agreeable way we can work
out some kind of solution during this difficult period.
I will appreciate any input you can offer us on this matter, and perhaps advise us
on the best course we can take in trying to accomplish this goal.
