Box 1111 Carlsbad, CA 92008 Dear Ms. Hoekstra, This letter is in response to your letter dated June 11 , 1990 regarding signs adjacent to Interstate 5. As I previously stated, it is a Planning Department policy not to issue sign permits facing the freeway unless the use is a tourist oriented service, such as service stations, restaurants or hotels. The uses proposed for your building are not tourist oriented and therefore should have signage oriented toward the street frontage and not Interstate 5. t In your letter, you referenced other signs that were visible from Interstate 5. Signage for the first three, Honda, Volvo and Kaiser are allowed because the signs do not face directly toward the freeway, but ionstead to the north or south. Chapman College, San Diego Florist Supply, Floral Trade Center, Planning Systems and O’Neal Environmental all have signage that face Avenida Encinas. Dixon Ford and the Mazda Dealership are part of an old Specific Plan that once allowed freeway oriented signage. Coldwell Banker, Home Savings, Sun Harbor and Prudential-Bache are signs which were previously issued in error. The other businesses on your list are directed to the frontage street they are located on and not toward the freeway. If you have any other questions, please feel free to give me a call at (61 9) 438-1 161 , extension 4452. Sincerely, VAN LYNCH Planning Tech VL:lh hoekstra.ltr 2075 Las Palmas Drive - Carlsbad, California 92009-4859 - (619) 438-1 161
