Dear Mr. Spindler,
Thank you for your application for the amendment of the sign program at Plaza Paseo Real.
Staff recognizes that there is a problem with the Hallmark signage and wishes to only address
their signage. We feel that it would be better to change the program to specifically allow their
sign by applying additional constraints rather than having tenants apply for an exemption. The
amendment you submitted was for a sign type D-1 , but Hallmark occupies a space that allows
either a type D or type E sign depending on store frontage. The City does not wish to change
the type D-1 sign.
What the City would like to propose is that the sign program be amended as follows:
Sign Type D - (This is in addition to the existing criteria)
For logos on Type 0 signs only, the first and last letter of the logo shall be
allowed a maximum letter height of 30". All other letters shall have a
maximum letter height of 16". Locations that qualify for a type D sign may
opt for one type E sign per tenant.
This should, in effect, specifically allow Hallmark's sign and prevent a substantial increase in
signage for Plaza Paseo Real. Additionally, the City would like to amend the sign program to
decrease the signage allowed on building A & B that faces Alga Road. We would like to see a
sign type smaller than the type E sign currently allowed. Currently, there are no signs with
permits on this elevation. If you could propose a sign type (design and materials), the staff
would like to review the change. We were thinking of a sand blasted redwood sign of 4 to 5 feet
in length.
