summ -~'PIA$MNG'SIGN PERMIT 92-29 - ARMY AND NAVY ACADEMY d
Dear Ms. Gomez:
The sign permit application for the "Army and Navy Academy" sign proposed on the west
side of an existing building in the 2600 block of Ocean Street (APN: 203-043-06) cannot
be approved as submitted. The building for which the sign is proposed is outside the
Redevelopment Area and is zoned R-3 (Multiple Family Residential). Section 21.41.070
(2) of the City's Zoning Ordinance allows a maximum of 20 square feet of signage for each
parcel zoned R-3.
AU existing signage on the parcel must be identified and be deducted from the 20 square
feet maximum to determine if there is any sign area remaining for the parcel to comply
with the code requirement. The application form submitted lists 198 square feet of existing
signage which is over the allowed maximum. However this total corresponds with the
proposed sign area. If this number is correct no sign area remains for the parcel. Existing
signage would have to be removed to permit a revised sign on the west facing elevation
of the building.
Should you have any questions regarding the sign code requirements which apply to this
parcel, I can be contacted at (619) 438-1161, extension 4446. Should you not wish to
revise your proposed sign to comply with the 20 square foot maximum for this entire
parcel, please let me know so that we may initiate a refund of a portion of the application
fee. Coastal Commission approval will also be needed for any signage on this parcel as it
is in an area outside of the City's Coastal Permitting authority.
Sincerely,
DON NEU
