Holzmiller Planning Department Director City of Carlsbad 2075 Las Palmas Drive Carlsbad, California 92009 Dear Mr. Holzmiller: wq&*wti We would appreciate your consideration and approval of our/ application for a sign permit for the Country Store,4901 El Camino Real. *-*s-. In October, 1990 I contacted Van Lynch about updating our directory sign and according to his reply (copy enclosed), it necessitated a new application because we wished to change the style, both for variety and to simplify the text. One positive consideration and one unique to our merchants is that they must convey a message to customers passing the store at 60 MILES AN HOUR (offically 50 miles an hour). As the owners of this complex, my wife and I feel it is a matter of great importance to maintain the condition and attractiveness of the El Camino Corridor. We have kept signage to a minimum - stating in our various leases that there shall be NO hand printed, butcher paper or other ##For Sale" temporary-type signs. Dealing with six merchants in the same complex, each of whom wants maximum coverage and still complying with City regulations sometimes gets a little harried. Van Lynch informed me our application was not approved and referred me to Gary Wayne. Mr. Wayne in turn said we could not have our application approved nor could we recondition the existing sign which was installed in August, 1974, (copy of application enclosed, also copy of letter to Mr. Wayne enclosed). As you know there are a good many signs along El Camino Real either legal or illegal. Since our merchants do not benefit from the City improvements in downtown Carlsbad, we respectfully request a variance to allow us to attract customers to our Complex through the revitalization of our existing sign.
