SUBJECT PS 93-61 SMITH & NEPHEW DONJOY
Dear Mr. Stephenson:
Staff has received and reviewed your sign permit application to place a wall sign on the
west facing elevation of the Smith and Nephew Building located at 2777 Loker Avenue
West. The following issues need to be addressed before a permit can be issued.
1. An amendment to the sign program will need to be processed. All signs on this
property are controlled by a sign program which establishes specific sign criteria
for this property. Changes that need to be made include:
a) Restricting the maximum square footage allowed for each major tenant sign
from 18 square feet to 18.6 square feet or higher.
b) Restricting the maximum letter height from 12 inches to 16 inches.
c) Allowing type faces other than Palatino Italic or Palatino Roman
d) Allowing logos.
2. The slogan "Leadership in Worldwide Healthcare" is not permissible. Section
IV.D(l)(d) of the Carlsbad Airport Business Center Specific Plan (SP-200) states
that "signs will be restricted to identifying only the person, firm, company or
corporation operating the use conducted on the site". Based on this criteria, only
"Smith + Nephew" could be approved.
