SUBJECT: CARLSBAD PLAZA SOUTH - BOSTON CHICKEN AWNING
Dear Matt
Pursuant to City staff's April 24, 1995 meeting with John Baker, Project Manager for Boston Chicken,
a determination has been made regarding resolution of the subject awning. As you are aware, the red,
white, and black awning is inconsistent with the Carlsbad Plaza South architectural design. In accordance
with the attached letter to Boston Pacific, the Boston Chicken awning may remain if the back lighting is
removed to the satisfaction of the City.
However, upon termination of lease with the Boston Pacific (Boston Chicken franchisee), the City will
require that Waken & Company expeditiously remove the entire awning. This removal will be necesary
to maintain consistency with the approved Site Development Plan for this center. As the owner and
manager of Carlsbad Plaza South, the City will expect that Waken & Company preclude the installation
of future awnings or architectural changes which are clearly inconsistent with the commercial center's
architectural design without receiving Planning Commission approval of an amendment to the approved
carlsbad Plaza south site development plan.
The City of Carlsbad also requires that Waken & Company change the carlb.bad Plaza South monument
sign to its previously approved copy in which the center's is placed at the top of the monument sign.
The current sign copy in which Boston Chicken signage is at the top of the monument sign was not
approved at that location; the approved Carlsbad Plaza south sign program permits major tenants to
incorporate signs below the center namc on the monument sign. Please verify with the Planning
Department that this change has been made within 30 days of receipt of this letter so that future sign
permits may be processed for this center.
