SUBJECT: CARLSBAD RANCH COMMUNITY IDENTITIY AND DIRECTIONAL
SIGNS - PS 98-154
Dear David:
The purpose of this letter is to address the sign program requirement that the maximum
number of individual signs for each monument sign is four. Planning Department staff
has reviewed the sign permit drawings for the Carlsbad Ranch Community Identity and
Directional Signs which were submitted as application PS 00-12. The purpose of the
sign permit application is to review the proposal to determine whether it is in compliance
with the previously approved sign program. The proposed “First Union Securities” sign
proposed as one of the four individual signs can be interpreted to qualify as a retail use.
However, this type of retail use was not what the monument signs were envisioned for.
Through this letter the Planning Department is providing you notice that more than 4
individual signs per monument sign are not now permitted nor would they be supported
in the future should a sign program amendment be submitted. There is the potential
that the Gemological Institute of America will also have a museum that is open to the
public for which a place on the monument sign may be desired. Such a request would
require that one of the existing signs be removed.
