FRIDAY’S Dear Deborah: This letter is in regards to the proposed Sign Program application (PS 99-14) for Holiday Inn and T.G.I. Friday’s (Friday’s) located at 850 Palomar Airport Road. The application needs to be supported by some additional information. Please provide a site plan showing a complete inventory of the existing locations, sizes, type of sign and sign copy for all the existing signs, including the gas station. Also provide building elevations with the proposed signs and the details for the new signs such as specifications on colors, materials, type of illumination, and dimensions for all the signs. Any existing photos of the site, referenced to a plan showing existing signs, that can be provided would be very helpful. The photo simulation for the south facing Friday’s does not conform to the site plan. The site plan shows the sign in the middle of the building, as does the building plans, rather than over the entrance on the eastern dormer on the photo. Regarding the proposed signs, staff is not going to support the two proposed monument signs. With the approval of the monument on I-5 came the removal of the monument at the southwest comer of the site. Staff would prefer to see the monument at the southwest comer of the property rather than the one on I-5. During the field visit with you and the others it was apparent that the south bound traffic on I-5 could see the wall signs on the building better than the monument. The monument is only visible to north bound traffic once you’ve past the exit to Palomar Airport Road. It would appear that the monument at the southwest comer of the site would serve the site better than the monument on the freeway. The sign identified as “II”, oriented towards the freeway, appears to only serve as freeway signs and are not acceptable. The remainder of the signs appear to be acceptable as proposed. The cover letter for the sign program application also identifies the awnings as included within the sign program. Typically awnings are not included in a sign program unless they have sign copy as a part of the awning. Since these awnings do not show any sign copy on them, they will not need to be included in the program. The awnings have been shown on the building plans and 2075 La Palmas Dr. l Carlsbad, CA 92009-l 576 * (760) 438-l 161 l FAX (760) 438-0894 @ PS 99-14 - HOLIDAY IN-&‘?T.G.I. FRIDAY’S MARCH 3,1999 have been approved to be installed with the understanding that the awnings are not lit from behind as to project light through the awning.
