Description/Explanation.
The objective being applied for is that our qualified members be allowed to continue showing and
selling their artwork on weekends (sometimes including Fridays) throughout the year, weather
permitting, on the firont lawn ofthe Carlsbad Inn. The Carlsbad-Oceandde Art League has
sponsored this **Art Mart,*' successfiilly and without known complaints, for past 10 years or more.
This activity attracts mostly passersby - pedestrians - fi-om the village, the beach and the Inn. It
lends a festive atmosphere to the area without affecting paridng and traffic flow to any significant
extent The artists participating on any given weekend, seldom exceed a dozen, or so, and they,
themselves use ofif-street public parking. Show hours are normally fiom 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Carlsbad-Oceanside Art League is a non-profit operation, incorporated in 1951. Our bylaws
state that ^the purpose qf the orgcmization is to promote the education and cultural appreciation
of flne art in the community. This purpose shall he supported by demonstrations^ student
scholarships, and outdoor displays^* In reflection ofthis charter, we hold monthly public
demonstrations at the Calavera Recreation Center and maintain a pennanent gallery in the Village
Faire Shopping Centre. We annually award scholarships to worthy high school student artists and
give cash awards to children in the K-8 age group, via shows we sponsor. The Art Mart at the
Carlsbad Inn is currently our expression of "outdoor displays."
Financially, the Art Mart is vital to the league. Our demonstrations and scholarship programs are
expensive and, except for a small grant pro^aded by the city, all our programs are entirely
member-supported. The income to C.O.A.L. provided by the artists participating in the Art Mart
is an essential element of our budget and its loss would have a severe impact on our ability to
continue to operate our programs.
