Re: Sidewalk Signs
Dear Business Owner:
It has recently been brought to our attention that there are two non-permitted
sidewalk/freestanding signs (see Attachment A) in front of your business at the
above referenced location. Our records show that your business was previously
approved to have one sidewalk sign of 7.6 square feet per Redevelopment Permit
02-47 (see Attachment B). In accordance with City sign regulations, each business
within the Village Redevelopment Area is permitted to have one (1)
sidewalk/freestanding sign located directly in front of the business to which they
relate. Furthermore, prior to the installation of any signage, an approved sign permit
is required. Please contact our office for sign permit information and prior to
installing new signage to your building.
As a courtesy to you, I am sending you this letter before this becomes a code
enforcement issue. If you have any questions regarding the information contained
in this letter, please contact my office at (760) 434-2812.

Re: Approval of Sidewalk Sign Permit RP02-47
Dear Mr. Drake:
Thank you for submitting your application for a Sidewalk Sign Permit. Having received ali
required documents your application has been approved. Attached is a copy of the approved
Sidewalk Sign Permit for your records.
The attached permit allows you to retain your sign for; 1) as long as the Housing and
Redevelopment Commission allows sidewalk signs to remain, 2) as long as the sign continues
to meet the standards outlined within the Carlsbad Village Master Plan and Design Manual, and
3) as long as the sign is consistent with this permit approval. It is important to note that the
Housing and Redevelopment Commission will complete an annual review of the sidewalk sign
regulations to determine their continued applicability. Most importantiy, the sign must be placed
as shown on the approved site plan. As your Sidewalk Sign is located on private property, a
valid Certificate of Insurance is not required
If you should have any questions regarding the information contained in this letter, please call
me at (760) 434-2812.
Sincerely,

Dear Sir or Madam:
The Carlsbad Housing & Redevelopment Department has begun a comprehensive code
enforcement effort to ensure that all A-Frame Signs and Outdoor Displays within the Village
area comply with all applicable regulations and have obtained all required permits.
Recently, staff walked the Village Redevelopment Project Area to identify the location of A-
Frame Signs and/or Outdoor Displays. It was noted that two freestanding a-frame signs were
present in front of your business. According to our records no permit has been issued for
freestanding a-frame signs at your location. All A-Frame Signs and Outdoor Displays on both
private property and within the public right-of-way must be permitted by the City of Carlsbad. U
the items have not been removed from the front of vour business within 10 business davs of
the date of this letter or a permit has not been obtained, vou mav be cited. Any items that
have not been removed from the public right-of-wav within 10 business davs of the date of
this letter for which a permit has not been obtained mav be summarilv removed without
further notice from the Citv and disposed of as surplus propertv
To obtain a permit for ONE freestanding a-frame sign, you must submit an application along
with the appropriate application fee to Redevelopment staff at 2965 Roosevelt Street Suite B,
Carlsbad, CA 92008. If the freestanding a-frame sign is placed within the public right of way, a
Certificate of Insurance in the amount of $1 million, naming the City of Carlsbad and the
Carlsbad Redevelopment Agency as additional insured, is also required. An application for an
A-Frame Sign has been enclosed for your use. The application includes "Location and
Development Criteria", which further explains the regulations pertaining to A-Frame Signs.
Again, as noted above, you must remove both A-Frame Signs until such time as you obtain the
required permit.
Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter. If you need further information or
assistance, please give me a call at (760) 434-2812.
Sincerely,
Linda Holmes
