The upgrade will include new parking striping, handicapped access, a trash enclosure, etc. As a result of these improvements, the applicant is required to provide for storm water quality improvements. These improvements will include filters in the new building roof drains, pervious pavement under the ADA access walkway, a vegetated swale, an oil water separator, a trench drain and a pipe draining the water from the oil water separator. The purpose of this study is to determine the rate of flow into these drainage devices and determine the required sizes of these improvements. VICINITY MAP ------------------ PROJECT SI1E 0 NORTH NTS This study is based upon the methodology in the San Diego County Hydrology Manual (SDCHM), dated June 2003. Description of Watershed: Pre-construction Drainage: The property lies in an urbanized area at the southwest comer ofl-5 and Carlsbad Village Drive. The runoff basin is predominantly roof and pavement, with small amounts of landscaping. The grades are flat, generally at 2% or less. Rainfall currently flows from the roof of the building and pump canopy onto the existing pavement. Runoff on the existing pavement flows to the northwest, across the sidewalk, into the gutter of Carlsbad Village Drive . Page 1 • • • Post Construction Drainage: No changes are proposed in drainage basin boundaries. Rainfall will flow from the roof of the structure, via downspouts, onto the existing pavement. Filters will be installed in the downspouts. From there, the site slopes to the northwest, towards Carlsbad Village Drive. The runoff from the gas pump canopy will flow onto the existing pavement and overland to the street. Runoff from the pump apron pavement will flow northwesterly to a proposed trench drain. The trench drain will intercept this flow and direct it into an oil water separator. The separated water from this device will flow, via a pipe, into the back of an existing storm drain inlet in the southerly curb of Carlsbad Village Drive. Runoff from the roof will flow into a vegetated swale, which will flow to the north, into an landscape inlet. Runoff will flow from there, via a pipe, into the back of the existing curb inlet on Carlsbad Village Drive. The proposed ADA path of travel, along the northeasterly edge of pavement will be paved with a porous pavement to reduce runoff from the site. HYDROLOGY CALCULATIONS: Hydrology Parameters: P6 and P24 are obtained from the SDCHM Isopluvials. The adjusted P6 is determined based on the guidelines in the Manual Figure 3-2 . The soil type for this area is determined from the US Department of Agriculture, Natural Resource Conservation Service WebSoilSurvey. This information shows that the site is underlain by soils of Type MiC. The soils are in the Type B Hydrologic Soils Group. Table 3-1 of the County Manual gives us Runoff Coefficients: Runoff Coefficients * Reduced due to pervious pavement in the accessible walkway. Since the drainage basins are small, paved and fairly flat, the times of concentration will be calculated based on Figure 3-3 to determine the initial flow length. We will use an ''n" value of 0.0 I 3 for the proposed PVC pipes . To determine the required volume of storage on the site to meet storm water quality requirements, we will use the 85th Percentile Precipitation from the isopluvial map, which is 0.62 inches. Therefore, the "n" value will be 0.025. STORM WATER; For the oil-water separator, we will use a volume based calculation, using the precipitation figure from the 85th Percentile Precipitation Isopluvial Map . Page6 • • • The oil water separator requires a tank of approximate 200 gallons. We have used only a third of the area of the pump apron, since the canopy will divert most ofthe rainfall from the apron. For the roof drains filters, we will use a rate based calculation. HYDRAULIC CONCLUSIONS: The proposed improvements are large enough that the existing runoff be intercepted by the storm drain devices described earlier in this report. We have determined that: 1. The proposed lined pipes will convey the runoff from the area under the canopy, the interceptor at Basin AI, and the vegetated swale. 2. The proposed oil/water separator has sufficient storage to "treat" the flow from the area under the canopy . CERTIFICATION AND SIGNATUBE: I hereby declare that I am the Engineer of Work for this project (DRAINAGE AND STORM- WATER IMPROVEMENTS REPORT FoR 7-Eleven, Carlsbad Village Drive), that I have exercised responsible charge over the design of this project as defined in Section 6703 of the Business and Professions Code, and that the design is consistent with current standards. I understand that the check of this project hydrology study by the City of Carlsbad is confined to a review only and does not relieve me, as Engineer of Work, of my responsibilities for project design.
