FIGURE 2
TYPICAL LIGHT RAIL CROSS-SECTIONS
2. GUIDEWAY ALIGNMENT:
Minimum Horizonal Curve Radius: 82 feet
Maximum Vertical Gradient: 4.3%
Preferred Maximum Gradient: 4.0%
3. CLEARANCES:
a) Between Light Rail (LRT) track centeriines on parallel tangent
track without center poles: li'O".
Between track centeriines on parallel tangent tracks with center
poles: 13'0". Track centeriine to face of curb, fence, tunnel walk
or wayside structure: 5'6" (minimum) (8'6" if freight operations
are involved).
Track centeriine to low-level platform: 5'5". LRT track
centeriine to railroad track centeriine: 14'0".
Face of pole supporting trolley contact conductor from railroad
track centeriine: 8'6".
Extendability • - For each alternative alignment the potential for future
additional extension should be considered. The 1984 RTP identifies coastal
corridor light rail service to Oceanside as a long range project. The ability of the
alignments in segment IV to be extended further northward will be examined. The
ability of the alingments in the south segment I to be a practical northward
extension of the alignment adopted by MTDB for the North Line to Old Town would
also be determined. Also the interchangeability of connecting the alignments
between segments I and II, II and III, and III and IV would be examined. Alignments
which lack flexibility in terms of extensions beyond the study corridor or in terms
of phased development within the corridor would be identified through this process.
