proposed sidewaik/freestanding sign. This site plan must also include a north arrow and
scale and indicate the location ofthe business in relationship to the location ofthe sign, the
amount of street frontage for the business, the width of the sidewalk in front of the
business, the locations of driveways, parking spaces, curb cuts for handicap access to the
public sidewalks, alleys and/or streets. See application checklist for additional

JANUARY 1, 1995 ONLY. THIS APPUCATION WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED UNLESS SECTION 6 IS SIGNED.
PLAN SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS
Two sets of the following plans shall be submitted with one copy of this application form:
1. A site plan showing: The location of the sign and business it serves, and any adjoining streets,
driveways, doorways, fire and handicap access.
2. An elevation showing: Exterior dimensions of the sign; sign materials; proposed sign copy; and colors.
The plans, completed application forms including all signatures and the application fee can be submitted to
the Planning Department located at 2075 Las Palmas Drive, Carlsbad, CA 92009, prior to 4 pm.

Early in 1993 the Jfcdsbad City Council asked a committee of eight

thc Zoning Ordinance. A sign permit must be obtained from the City for these signs.
Ordinance Standards (mandatorv)
• Maximum of ooe sign per busmess which must be located in froot of the buildmg to which it relates.
• Maximum area is ten square feet per face. Maximum of two faces per stgn.
• Maximum width of three feet and a maximum height of five feet.
• Signs must be eicher square or rectangular.
• Signs must be of a durable matenal, and shall be kept, clean, aeatiy pamted, and m good repair.
• '.\' frame signs must be ten feet apart, munimum.
• Signs shall not block pedestnan or vehicle visibility or obstruct access to public streets, dnveways. parkmg spaces,
fire doors, fire escapes, handicapped access or any public nght-of-way and shall not obscure or mterfere with any
traffic sign, public safety sign or notice.
• Signs shall not be permanently affixed to any object, structure or the ground.
• The signs are not allowed oo public and pnvate property abuttmg pnme artenal and toajor artenal streets and scemc
comdors except m the redevelopment area.
• "A" frame signs are prohibited after January I, 1995.
Guidelines These guidelines are to assist the sign designer and compliment the mandatory ordinance standards. They are
rntended to encourage a high level of design quality while also providmg flexibility to encourage creative destgn.
• 1. Tbe sign design should be simple and easy to read. Use a brief message. Tbe fewer the words, the more effective
the sign. A simple sign with a bnef message is faster to read, looks cleaner, and is more effective. Usmg overly
mtncate type faces or tmxing typefaces on one sign also makes it more difficult to read quickly and reduces the sign's
ability to communicate.
• 2. Use a durable matenal such as MDO (Medium Density Overlay) plywood or similar wood-like matenal. Signs must
have a stained or pamted surface fixush.
• 3. The background color for all signs should be white.
• 4. The text should be m 3 colon only (too many colors compete with content for the viewers attention). Fluorescent or
Day-Glo colors are not acceptable.
• S. If a unique business logo is proposed, it's color shall not count as one of the three text colors. (Ttem 4 above).
• 6. Changeable text areas should coinply with the above cntena (l-S) and should occupy no more than 50% of the sign
face. Paper or non-rigid changeable areas are not acceptable. SUGGESTED "A" FRAME DESIGNS
