In the year 2001, my wifb and I had to decide to either add a large second story edition, or completely remodeled and upgraded the existing granny flat to use as a residence fir her fkther, who is disabled and his partner, Valia who bad terminal caucer. We chose to do the later of the two, because of the tremendous stress that they where both under. Before startkg this projezt, we contacted the City to inquire about permits. We were notified by the City tbat they could not permit the structure, but we could fix it up, witch would only make us a non-codorming property, limiting what we Could eventually add to our main house. Mer we hold completed the renovation of the granny flat, we were notified by the City that we could not keep the structure because it does not meet setbacks. We have since applied for avariance to allow us to keep the gratlny flat. To the Ci, this is only a stmctwe that do& not meet code, but to our children’s Grandpa, this is home. This structure has been m place for over 30 years, and wh we took the time and money to make it a more appedbg, the Ci has notified us of the need to bring it into code.
