Flag Retirement Boxes

Per the United States Flag Code, American flags that are no longer fitting to display must be
destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning.
Since 2013, the City of Carlsbad Fire Department has maintained two flag retirement boxes
installed at the Carlsbad City Library and at the Georgina Cole Library so that community
members can ensure a proper retirement of their American flags.
The city drop boxes, which resemble red mailboxes, provide a convenient and respectful
method for flag retirement; however, they are showing signs of wear and tear, and are
approaching the end of their useful lives.
Fortunately, the city was recently contacted by a representative of San Diego County Supervisor
Greg Cox's office, informing us that the county is initiating a regional program to provide flag
retirement boxes throughout San Diego County.
As such, the city will receive replacement boxes to install on city property and has been asked
(along with cities throughout San Diego County) to provide a city seal to be displayed on the
boxes that will be distributed throughout the region.
Furthermore, the City of Carlsbad will be recognized in county publicity regarding the program
as a regional leader for providing this service to the community since 2013.
