Since 2013, the City of Carlsbad Fire Department has maintained two flag retirement boxes installed at the Carlsbad City Library and at the Georgina Cole Library so that community members can ensure a proper retirement of their American flags. The city drop boxes, which resemble red mailboxes, provide a convenient and respectful method for flag retirement; however, they are showing signs of wear and tear, and are approaching the end of their useful lives. Fortunately, the city was recently contacted by a representative of San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox's office, informing us that the county is initiating a regional program to provide flag retirement boxes throughout San Diego County. As such, the city will receive replacement boxes to install on city property and has been asked (along with cities throughout San Diego County) to provide a city seal to be displayed on the boxes that will be distributed throughout the region. Furthermore, the City of Carlsbad will be recognized in county publicity regarding the program as a regional leader for providing this service to the community since 2013. cc: Celia Brewer, City Attorney Elaine Lu key, Chief Operations Officer Michael Calderwood, Fire Chief Heather Pizzuto, Library & Cultural Arts Director City Manager's Office City Hall 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive I Carlsbad, CA 92008 I 760-434-2820 t Memo ID #2019035
