Chapters Cafe Grand Opening Aug. 10 'Carlsbad City Library
A grand opening celebration of Chapters Cafe, located in the Carlsbad City Library complex, will
be held Saturday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 pm. Although this is not a city-sponsored event,
councilmembers would be most welcome to attend. The event will feature samples from the
menu and live music.
As background, the Carlsbad City Library renovation project, completed in 2016, included a
space for a cafe that would support and compliment a variety of uses in the surrounding library
and cultural arts complex, foster community gathering, and enhance the patron experience.
Following the renovation and the re-settling of regular programming and patron use, a formal
search for a cafe operator was conducted. A lease was executed with House Martel, LLC, and
approved by city council on June 28, 2018. The cafe, Chapters, is owned and operated by Lisa
Martel, a long-time North County resident.
Following the lease execution, the cafe operator worked with the city to complete construction
and pass inspections. The cafe received its Certificate of Occupancy on July 3. Chapters Cafe has
had a soft opening since then, giving the operator time to make menu and service adjustments
based on initial customer experiences.
The Chapters menu features coffee, tea, sandwiches, pastries, grab and go snacks, drinks for
kids and more. Patrons (and library staff) have been enjoying trying out the cafe's selections.
Preliminary activity indicates patrons are excited about the cafe, with increasing numbers of
customers and positive feedback. The cafe will also prnvide catering for events presented by
either the Library & Cultural Arts Department or renters of the meeting facilities on site.
