Memo ID# 2019150
This memorandum provides an update to the Nov. 7, 2019, memorandum regarding a Coastal
Conservancy Climate Ready Grant to develop a sea level rise (SLR) impact analysis and potential
adaption strategies for the southern portion of the Carlsbad coas~line.
Background .
On July 7, 2019, in partnership with Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO)'s Center for Climate
Change Impacts and Adaptation, city staff submitted a grant application to.the California Coastal
Conservancy. On Sep. 16, 2019, Coastal Conservancy staff notified the city that our grant
application was nominated for award.
Discussion
At their Dec. 19, 2019 meeting, the Coastal Conservancy Board voted to approve the grant. The
proposed project would entail modeling of a detailed SLR impact analysis, development of .
potential adaptation scenarios, facilitation of discussions with state agencies and preparation bf
a report. The total estimated cost is $580,265. The Coastal Conservancy grant will cover $489,075
of the cost, and the City of Carlsbad will contribute staff time to cover the remaining cost.
Next Steps
Staff will return to City Council with a Coastal Conservancy grant agreement, SIO research
agreement and contract for a consultant to provide technical services by Spring 2020.
