This memo focuses on actions and information that are new since the last update. Emergency Operations Center • Emergency Operations Center activated to support COVID-19 mitigation and response operations and information sharing. • Monitoring National Weather Service heat advisory conditions, sharing information with vulnerable populations. Regional status of outbreak (all data from April 23 at 5 p.m.) California Confirmed cases 39,010 Increase from previous day 2,993 Deaths 1,514 San Diego County Confirmed cases 2,643 Increase from previous day 152 Deaths 100 Carlsbad Confirmed cases 50 Change from previous day 0 CORONAVIRUS ACTIONS April 24, 2020 Page 2 State of California • The state reported its largest single-day increase in deaths from COVID-19 yesterday, with 1,514, 164 more than was reported Wednesday. • California is now the first state recommending testing of some asymptomatic people, such as health care workers, first responders and correctional workers. Police Department • Finalized operational plans for the weekend in anticipation of protests along the beaches, in coordination with city lifeguards and state park rangers. • Increased staffing to police the beaches, trails and parks, and to handle any protest activity. • Homeless Outreach Team is delivering face coverings made by community members to the homeless. Fire Department • Increasing lifeguard staffing this weekend because of weather conditions and the possibility of protests, including paddle-outs into the water. • Received a second delivery of 37,000 N95 surgical masks to be distributed to regional firefighting agencies. Public Works • Automatic touch-free walk signals went into effect this morning at ten additional crosswalks in the Village. Signs notifying the public were installed. Parks & Recreation • Delivered shade canopies and folding tables to the Barker Family’s food drive, held during the Carlsbad Unified School District’s lunch pickup program at Carlsbad High School. • Picked up boxes of donated fresh produce from the Carlsbad Strawberry Company and re-distributed produce through the senior meal program. • Provided 1,250 meals in the senior meal program. o 730 meals were delivered to residents’ homes by staff; 520 meals were picked- up at the Senior Center by residents. o The total number of meals provided represents a 79% increase in the average total number of meals served pre-COVID-19.
