This memo focuses on actions and information that are new since the last update. Emergency Operations Center • Emergency Operations Center activated to support COVID-19 mitigation and response operations and information sharing. Regional status of outbreak (all data from May 5 at 5 p.m.) California San Diego County Carlsbad Confirmed cases 58,304 4,160 57 Increase from day before 3,234 140 1 Deaths 2,374 150 n/a Fire Department • Two firefighter/paramedics were trained on COVID-19 nasal swab testing by the county Tuesday. One more is being trained today. We are getting fire personnel trained in case it is needed for the testing for first responders and possible city staff. • City lifeguards, with help from police, have had to keep discouraging gatherings of people on the beach, mostly among younger beachgoers. Parks & Recreation • Launched Wellness Wednesdays for Adults 50+ which reviews and discusses health strategies to stay well while staying safe over Zoom with a call-in option. Weekly topics will include mental health, physical fitness, healthy cooking and mindfulness. • Canceled special event permit for Hot Rods & Cool Treats, originally scheduled for May 16, 2020. CORONAVIRUS ACTIONS May 6, 2020 Page 2 Community Outreach • A local media outlet has expressed an interest in the city's relationship with a Sage Creek High School student project, Grocery Grab. A CERT member is a mentor to the team members and is providing business planning and operational considerations for the project. Human Resources • Status of employees with possible COVID-19 exposure: Cleared to return to work 41 Self-quarantined due to symptoms, have not been tested 0 Communication & Engagement • Created and shared the following with the public on city communication channels: o Reminder to tune into the City Council meeting and how to participate o City Council’s approval of a $5 million economic revitalization package for Carlsbad small businesses o Latest case numbers from the county and state o Batiquitos trail opening o Map of state-managed vs city-managed Carlsbad beaches o Virtual and bilingual family story time with the library o Golf cart rules for those over 55 or with a disability o Virtual resources to celebrate National Bike Month o Wellness Wednesday videos to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month o CERT member virtual graduation o Map of Carlsbad restaurants open for business • Prepared and distributed daily update from the city: o Thank you to residents for respecting partial reopening of beaches, trails and parks o Recap of what’s allowed at each recreational site o Continued guidelines for face coverings and gatherings o Governor’s announcement on retail businesses o Announcement that counties can get more control over reopening o Testing update o Latest case data o City Council meeting reminder o Community recognition • Drafted a news release summarizing City Council’s approval of the economic recovery and revitalization initiative and distributed it to media. • Updated the COVID-19 webpages: o Small business loan program o Other business revitalization strategies approved o County’s safe reopening framework and template CORONAVIRUS ACTIONS May 6, 2020 Page 3 o State’s phased-in reopening roadmap o Batiquitos Lagoon trail opening • Updated the employee public health guidelines and procedures poster and employee testing flowchart. • Drafted and released an employee email about this week’s wellness webinars. • Responded to 47 questions and comments on the city’s social media platforms and Communication & Engagement Department’s email.
