The California Peace Officers Association (CPOA) is a 26,000-member professional organization that strives to provide progressive leadership training for peace officers. Yearly, they provide training on current topics that peace officers are facing. Due to COVID-19, the CPOA developed a virtual training that will allow attendees to receive comprehensive and in-depth training on a variety of topics virtually. For years, the CPOA has provided a training conference (ADVANCE) that provided participants a menu style ability to attend classes and trainings. As with many areas in our lives, the CPOA developed a virtual platform that will allow officers to attend all eighteen different training classes over an approximately two-month period. Officers and Dispatchers are required to complete 24 Continued Professional Training credits every two years. This will allow a participant to accrue up to 38 Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) credits toward Continued Professional Training, which was not historically feasible. Some examples of classes offered at this training are "Re-Imagining Public Safety" and "Reconciliations: Joining communities and law enforcement to foster mutual trust." Additionally, understanding the need to be fiscally responsible during these unprecedented times and knowing that continued training for our members of the police department is crucial, this new virtual training provides an opportunity to register as a department for this training for $1,400 for all sworn police officers as well as all dispatchers. If the officers and dispatchers were to individually register for this virtual training, it would have cost $131,400. As Carlsbad PD moves forward, training our personnel will continue to be a priority to ensure we are delivering the best service possible to the community we serve.
