This memo focuses on actions and information that are new since the last update. Emergency Operations Center • Emergency Operations Center activated to support COVID-19 mitigation and response operations and information sharing. Regional status of outbreak (All data from Oct. 15) California County Carlsbad Confirmed cases 855,072 51,327 769 Increase since last memo 5,044 2,666 6 Deaths 16,639 844 n/a Human Resources • Status of employees with possible COVID-19 exposure: Cleared, no positive diagnosis 154 Cleared after positive diagnosis 10 Self-isolated due to positive diagnosis 1 Library & Cultural Arts • Curbside ballot drop-off at the City Library on Dove Lane is so popular, with nearly 1,000 ballots dropped off on Tuesday alone, that the Police Department helped library staff with traffic management on Tuesday and worked closely with staff Wednesday morning to reconfigure the parking lot to alleviate traffic through the Plaza Paseo Real shopping center and along El Camino Real. • County Registrar of Voters Michael Vu visited the library this morning and complimented the efficiency of the layout. {city of Carlsbad CORONAVIRUS ACTIONS Oct. 15, 2020 Page 2 Parks & Recreation • The gyms of the Pine Avenue, Calavera Hills, and Stagecoach Community Centers will not be available for reservable pickleball and basketball play from Oct. 19 through Nov. 4, 2020. Because of the pandemic, these gyms will be used as election polling places from Oct. 31 through Nov. 3. The additional closure days are needed for the Registrar of Voters’ set-up and take-down procedures. • The Crossings at Carlsbad Municipal Golf Course experienced the highest number of rounds of golf played over any previous month of September. • Provided the following virtual recreation offerings: o eSports Tournament - The city’s first virtual eSports tournament gave teens an opportunity to gather virtually to show off their talents playing Fortnite. o Lunch at the Culinary Lab - In honor of Leif Erickson Day, Chef Kyle prepared Icelandic cuisine including rye bread and lobster soup. The Fire Department also shared kitchen safety tips for Fire Prevention Week. This week’s theme is brunch. o History Mystery - An image of an antique Catholic crucifix finely crafted of wood and detailed metal work was shared on the Friends of Carrillo Ranch Facebook and Instagram pages. o Virtual Preschool - The virtual preschool program for children ages three and four started its second session last week. Participants enjoyed sing-alongs, story time and festive fall crafts. o UCSD Osher Lifelong Learning - October’s weekly video lecture from the UCSD Osher database kicked off with a presentation on the world-famous graphic artist M.C. Esher. o The ABCs & Part D of Medicare 2021 - A local Medicare agent discussed Medicare and current changes during the open enrollment period.
