Our services were provided in the field from August 14 to September 25, 1991. Field densily test results are tabulated on Table 2, "Field Density Test Results". Test locations are shown on the attached As-Graded Geotechnical Map, Plates I and 2. orporate Office: 15 Mason IIrvine, GA 92718 ?14/951-8686 fax: 714/951-7969 I I I I I I I 1.0 AUTHORIZATION This report and the associated services were performed in accordance with the provisions of our proposal No. SDP1-5950R, dated August 14, 1991. l.l SCOPE OF SERVICES Field personnel were provided for this project to perform observations and tests in order that we could develop professional opinions. Our services did not include supervision or direction of the actual work of the contractor, his employees, or agents. Specifically, our services involved the following: a. Testing and observation of fill piacement. b. Observation and mapping of cleanouts and general geologic conditions. Geotechnical Services, Construction Inspection and Testing Davidson Communities Job No. 04-7919-009-03-10 October 24, 1991 Log No. 1-2129 Page 2 c. Laboratory testing to determine pertinent engineering characteristics of the soil materials. d. Installation of three settlement monuments and analysis of settlement data. e. Preparation of this report which summarizes our findings, opinions, and recommendations. 2.0 PURPOSE OF GRADING Grading was done in order to prepare fill areas in which future import materiais may be placed. Grading during this phase of construction involved removal and recompaction of topsoil and alluvium. Where groundwater prevented the complete removal of alluvium, settlement monuments were installed and monitored. The site has been left in a sheet graded condition; finished pads and street cores were not constructed during this phase of grading. 3.0 GEOLOGIC SETTING The site is located in the coastal plain section of the Peninsular Ranges geomorphic province of southern California. Generally, the coastal plain consists of somewhat subdued landforms made up of relatively flat lying Cenozoic sedimentary bedrock. Specifically, the site is underlain by the Eocene epoch Delmar Formation and Torrey Sandstone. Alluvial deposits and topsoil overlie the formational materials. The geologic units are described in decreasing age, in the following paragraphs. 3.1 Delmar Formation (Man Svmbol Td^ The Delmar Formation was encountered at the lower cleanout elevations on site (below about elevation 53 feet), however it is not present at finished grade. This unit as observed on site consists of a gray green sandy siltstone with some clay (Unified Classification ML) with occasional silty or clayey sandstone lenses. Davidson Communities Job No. 04-7919-009-03-10 October 24, 1991 Log No. 1-2129 Page 3 3.2 Torrev Sandstone (Man Svmbol Tt) The Torrey Sandstone is the bedrock unit exposed at finished grade. This unit typically consists of a light gray silty fine sandstone (Unified Classification SM). Bedding within the Torrey Sandstone is generally massive, with occasional thin silty interbeds. The expansion potential of these sandstone materials is typically very low. 3.3 Alluvium (Mao Svmbol OaH Alluvium was present in the main and side canyons on site. The majority of the fill placed in this (remedial) phase of grading was derived from alluvium. The alluvium on site ranges from a light yellow brown silty sand (Unified Classification SM) to dark brown clayey sand/silt (Unified Classification SC). The alluvium was removed to either bedrock or to near groundwater in areas to receive fill. The expansion potential of these materials is expected to be in the low to medium range. 3.4 Geologic Structure The site is typified by mostly massive and nearly flat lying Delmar Formalion and Torrey Sandstone sedimentary bedrock. The contact between the Delmar Formation and the Torrey Sandstone is conformable; it varies from gradational to interfingering. Bedding where observed in the cleanouts was generally flat lying to dipping a few degrees towards the southwest. Two high angle, normal faults were observed, trending roughly north-south, with at least 4 feet of separation down dropped towards the east. No evidence of recent fault movement (within 11,000 years) was observed during field mapping. Topsoil and alluvium are the only geologic units on site that are younger than 11,000 years, the time division between active and potentially active faulting. A review of aerial photographs following geologic mapping did not indicate topographic expression typical of active faulting on the faults discovered during grading. Davidson Communities Job No. 04-7919-009-03-10 October 24, 1991 Log No. 1-2129 Page 4 4.0 GRADING OPERATIONS 4.1 General The site grading operations are shown on the 40-scale grading plans developed by O'Day Consultants, however, the pads and streets shown have not been built. The project has been left in a sheet graded condition. Copies of the grading plan serve as the base map for our attached As-Graded Geotechnical Maps. Site grading was performed using normal cut and fill mass grading techniques with heavy earthmoving equipment. 4.2 Preparation of Natural Ground The area was cleared of any vegetation. Topsoil, alluvium and weathered bedrock were removed to materials which were considered suitable to support fills or structures. The removal limits are shown on the As-Graded Geotechnical Map, Plates 1 and 2. Some areas of shallower topsoil were left as natural slopes on the upper hillsides, to be removed by future grading or benching operations. In areas where groundwater precluded complete removal of alluvium, settlement monuments were installed and monitored, as described in Section 4.5. Subgrade soils exposed in areas lo receive fill were scarified, moisiure condiiioned and compactive effort was applied. 4.3 Soil Types The soil lypes used as fill are tabulated in Table 1, "Laboratory Test Results". The maximum dry densities and optimum moisture contents, as calculated by the modified Proctor melhod (ASTM D 1557-78), are also included in Table 1. Soils at the site consist of mostly silty sand (Unified Classification SM), wilh some sandy sill (Unified Classification ML). Davidson Communities Job No. 04-7919-009-03-10 October 24, 1991 Log No. 1-2129 Page 5 4.4 Fill Placement FiU soils were placed in 6 to 8 inch lifts, brought to near optimum moisiure content, and compactive effort was applied. Equipment used for compaction included rubber lire compactors, a blade, water trucks and loaded scrapers. Density and moisture tests were made in accordance with ASTM D2922 and D3017 (Nuclear Methods). The moisture and density tests are tabulated in Table 2, "Results of Compaction Tests". The elevations indicated for the tests were estimated either from field grade slakes or from the projeci plans, and should only be considered rough estimates. The estimated locations and elevations should not be ulilized for the purpose of preparing cross- sections showing test locations, or in any case, for the purpose of after-the-fact evaluation of the sequence of fill placement. 4.5 Settlement Monuments Three settlement monuments were placed in areas where compacled fill was placed over alluvium. The complete removal of alluvium in these areas was not practical because of shallow groundwater being present. The settlement monuments were inslalled in accordance wilh our referenced Addendum Grading Plan Review. Monuments were positioned at the base of the alluvium removal areas, prior to placing compacted fill. The monuments were surveyed at regular intervals by O'Day Consultants for elevation. The approximate locations of the settlement monuments are shown on the As-Graded Geotechnical Maps. For a discussion of the alluvial settlement, see Section 5.3. The following lable summarizes the settlement monument data. Installation Last Reading Approximale Monument Dale Date Total Settlement 1 8-16-91 10-7-91 0.07 feet 2 8-21-91 10-7-91 0.03 feet 3 8-26-91 10-7-91 0.28 feet Davidson Communities Job No. 04-7919-009-03-10 October 24, 1991 Log No. 1-2129 Page 6 5.0 GEOTECHNICAL EVALUATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS 5.1 General In our opinion, grading and compaction was performed in general accordance with the intent of the recommendations presented in the referenced geotechnical reports for the project and the requiremenls of the City of Carlsbad. The conclusions and recommendations contained herein are based on our observations and testing performed from August 14 to September 25,1991. No representations are made as to the quality and extent of malerials not observed. 5.2 Trench and Wall Backfill Any trench and wall backfill should be placed by mechanical compaction to a minimum of 90 percent of the laboratory determined maximum density. 5.3 Settlement Total settlement that has been measured by the settlement monuments has so far been less than 0.3 feet. As expected, more settlement has occurred where greater amounts of fill were placed. Settlement is expected to continue when the project resumes and additional fill is placed. Settlement monuments should continue to be read as the construction progresses, as recommended by the Geotechnical Engineer. 5.4 Foundation and Slab Recommendations The preliminary foundation and slab recommendations contained in our referenced reports remain valid. Final recommendations will be based on our observation and testing during continued grading and will be provided upon completion of mass grading. Davidson Communities October 24, 1991 Job No. 04-7919-009-03-10 Log No. 1-2129 Page 7 6.0 SUMMARY Our descriptions of the compaction operations, as well as observations and testing services, are limited to work performed between August 14 and September 25, 1991.
