LAGUNA RIVIERA UNIT NO. 2
CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA
In accordance with the request of Mr. Jerry L. Rombotis of your or-
ganization, we have provided soil engineering services in conjunc-
tion with the grading of the subject site. These services included
observation of the removal of potentially expansive soil existing
within two feet of rough lot grade and the testing of fill as placed
and compacted.
Fill was placed, compacted and tested on Lots 36 through 39, 42
through 57, 60 through 64 and 66 through 78.
During the grading of Unit No. 1, excess fill was placed on two lots
designated Lots A and B and adjacent streets. The fill placed was
compacted and tested and the test results were presented in our reports
dated flay 22 and July 7, 1958. These two lots are presentjy a part of
this unit and are numbered Lots 36 and 37. 'A,copy of the reports of
previous testing are attached; additional fill, which was placed on
these lots during the present phase of grading has been compacted and
tested and the test results are included in this report.
Site preparation, compaction and testing for the subject grading were
done between July 27 and September 10, 1968 in accordance with the
"Specifications for Controlled Fill" in our letter dated January 10,
1967.
As the site grading progressed, the compaction procedures were ,ob-
served and compaction tests were made to determine the relative com-
paction of the fill in place. Field observations and compaction test
results indicate that the fill has been compacted to 90 percent or
more of maximum laboratory density. The results of compaction tests
are given on the attached forms.
Laboratory tests to determine moisture-density relationships, maxilnum
dry density, optimum moisture content, grain size distribution, plas-
ticity characteristics and strength and swell characteristics v:ere
performed on representative samples of the material used for fill. The
results of laboratory tests are'given on the attached forms.

Laboratory tests indicate that nonexpansive fill .was placed within 2
feet of rough grade on all fill lots noted above.
- During grading of Lots 42 through 44, 46 through 51, 60 and 66 through
73, potentially expansive soil was replaced with nonexpansive fill to
a depth of 2 feet where encountered within the entire level ,lot pad.
- A visual inspection of the subject site at the completion of grading
indicates that potentially expansive soil is.not evi, dent at finish
grade on either cut or fill lots.
-
Footings for structures placed on nonexpansive undisturbed soil or
nonexpansive properly compacted fill may be designed for a bearing
pressure of 2000 pounds per square foot at a depth of 12 inches be-
low rough lot grade. Footings should have a minimum width of 12
inches.
-
-
.The elevation of compaction tests shown as finished grade (FG) tests
correspond to the elevations shown on the grading plans 'for Laguna
Riviera Unit.No. 2, latest revised date June 28, 1968 prepared by
Raymond R. Ribal, Civil Engineer.

This report covers the fill placed under our observation during the
dates specified above. Additional fill placed after these dates, as
well as the backfill in utility trenches located within 5 feet of a
building and greater than 12 inches deep, or any trench 5 feet or more
from a building and in excess of 5 feet in depth, should be compacted
under the observation of this office and tested to assure compliance
with the earthwork specifications of the project. 'This office shculd
be contacted at least 24 hours prior to backfilling operations. Utility
service trenches within 5 feet o-F a building that are 'perpend'icular to
the building footings and are less than 12 inches wide and less than 3
feet deep are not subject to this recommendation.
-
.-
-
-
-
Structures that will not tolerate differential settlements (such as
foundations, swimming pools, concrete decks, walls, etc.) should not
be located within 5 feet of the top of a slope. Footings located
closer than 5 feet from the top of the slope should be extended in
depth until the outer bottom edge of the footing is 5 feet horizon-
tally from the outside face of the slope.
The inspections and tests of compaction made during the period of our
services on the subject site were in accordance with the local accep-
table standards for this period. The conclusions or opinions drawn
from the tests and site inspections apply only to our work with re-
spect to grading and represent conditions at the date of our final
inspection.

LAGUNA RIVIERA ESTATES UNIT NO. 2
LOTS A AND B
CARLSBAO, CALIFORNIA
In accordance with the request of Mr. Jerry L. Rombotis of your firm,
we have provided soil engineering services in conjunction with the
recent gradin of the subject site. These services included
observation of the gradinpand compaction procedures and taking
compaction tests in the fill in place.
Site preparation, compaction and testing for the subject fill were
done between June 22 and 29, 1967, in accordance with the Earthwork
Specifications and reconmendations presented in our letter dated
January 10, 1967.
Fill was placed, compacted and tested on Lots A and B. Previous
fill placed on these lots was done durinq the period between April 7
through 13, 1967.
As the site grading proqressed, the compaction procedures were
observed and compaction tests were made to determine the relative
compaction of the fill in place. Field observations and compaction
test results indicate that the fill has been compacted to 90 percent
or more of maximum laboratory density. The approximate locations of
all compaction tests to date and the limits of compacted fill are
shown ion the attached Figure 1. The results 0.i compaction tests taken
during previous grading on the subject lots have been reported in our
letter dated May 22, 1967.
Laboratory tests to determine moisture-density relationships, maximum
dry density, optimum moisture content, grain size distribution,
plasticity characteristics and strength characteristics were performed
on representative samples of the Imaterial used for fill. The results
of labora.tory tests have been presented in our report dated play 12, 1967,
for La9una Riviera Estates Unit No. 1.
Laboratory tests indicate that nonexpansive ,fill was placed lrithin
2 feet of rough grade.

A visual inspection of the subject site at the completion of grading
indicates that potentially expansive soil is not evident at finish
grade on either lot.
Footings for residential ~structures placed on nonexpansive properly
compacted fill may be designed for a bearing pressure of 2,000 pounds
per square foot at a depth of 12 inches below rough lot grade.
The elevation of compaction tests shown as finished grade (F.G.) tests
correspond to the elevations shown on the grading plans for Laguna
Riviera Tract, Unit No. 1, City of Carlsbad, California, dated
January 7, 1967, prepared by Raymond R. Ribal, Civil Engineer.
This final report covers the fill placed under our observation during
the dates specified above. Additional fill placed after these dates,
as well as the backfill in utility trenches located within 5 feet of a
building and in excess of 5 feet in depth, should be compacted under
the observation of this office and tested to assure compliance with
the earthwork specifications of the project. Thisoffice should be
contacted at least 24 hours prior to backfilling operations. Utility
service trenches within 5 feet of a building that are perpendicular
to the building footings and are less than 12 inches wide and less than
3 feet deep are not subject to this recommendation.
Structures that will not tolerate differential settlements (such as
foundations, swimming pools, concrete decks, walls, etc.) should not be
located within 5 feet of the top of a slope. Footings located closer
than 5 feet from the top of the slope should be extended until the
bottom edge of the footing is 5 feet horizontally from the outside face
of the slope.
The inspections and tests of compaction made during the period of our
services on the subject site were in accordance with the local acceptable
standards for this period. The conclusions or opinions drawn from the
tests and site inspections apply only to our work with respect to gradinq
and represent conditions at the date of our final inspection.
We will accept no responsibility for any subsequent changes made to the
site by others or by uncontrolled action of water or by failure of others
to properly repair damages caused by uncontrolled action of water.
