February 1, 1991 City of Carlsbad Municipal Projects 2075 Las PaImas Drive Carlsbad, California 92008 SCS&T 8921130 Report No. 5 ATTENTION: Dan Clark, Project Manager SUBJECT: Second Addendum to Geotechnical Report, Lake Calavera Golf Course, Carlsbad, California. REFERENCE: First “Addendum to Geotechnical Report,” Report No. 4, dated December 2 1, 1990. Gentlemen: This second addendum to our geotechnical report is to further address the stability of the marsh areas where they will be crossed by the sewer main and golf cart paths. We presented a preliminary assessment of this condition in the referenced report, which was prepared prior to completing our laboratory testing. This testing is now complete. As stated in the referenced report, several test borings were extended through the alluvial deposits near areas where the sewer main and golf cart paths will cross areas underlain by alluvium. In addition, two borings were extended in the area of the proposed club house and two shallow borings were made in the proposed cut area above No. 1 fairway. The locations of these borings are shown on the plan included in the pocket of this report. The borings were logged by a member of our geology staff and these logs are presented on Plates Number 3 through 8, attached hereto. 6280 RIVERDALE STREET l SAN DIEGO, CA 92120 l 619-280-4321, FAX 619-280-4717 l p.0. BOX 600627, SAN DIEGO, CA 92160 678 ENTERPRISE STREET l ESCONDIDO, CA 92029 l 619-746-4544, FAX 619-746-6579 - - SCS&T 892 1130 February 1, 1991 Page 2 The laboratory tests performed for our evaluation of the stability of the marsh areas that may be crossed included consolidation tests and in-situ density tests. The results of our consolidation tests are presented on Plates Number 10 through 13 attached hereto. The in-situ density test results are shown on the boring logs. In addition, in-situ density, direct shear and expansion index tests were performed on samples obtained in the area of the club house. This information was used in formulating our findings in the referenced report in regards to the club house. The results of these tests are presented on the plates attached hereto. The results of the consolidation tests basically confirmed our evaluation of the marsh-like areas as discussed in the referenced report. However, the consolidation tests also indicated that the alluvial deposits are not quite as compressible as we anticipated, meaning that the magnitude of compression or settlement will be somewhat less than we expected. The site preparation discussed in the referenced report will, however, still be necessary. To reiterate our discussion, some of the alluvial deposits in the main stream bed contain excessive organics that make them unsuitable to support fill or to be used as fill material. This material will need to be removed and placed in nonstructural areas. The underlying alluvium can be bridged over with compacted till. It will probably take a two-foot-thick layer of dry sandy soil to bridge the alluvium. At this time, we do not anticipate that a rock or Geofabric stabilization blanket will be necessary. It will, however, be necessary to allow the fill to settle prior to constructing settlement-sensitive improvements such as utilities and pavements. The finger canyons that enter the main stream channel were also found to have relatively low consolidation characteristics, as we suspected. Again, we anticipate cleaning out organic-contaminated soils and bridging over the alluvial deposits. In conclusion, we do not anticipate any unusual construction or site preparation problems for the proposed crossing. The most important item for these crossings is to allow the underlying alluvium to consolidate prior to installing underground utilities. This should take no longer than one month for the finger canyons and three months for the main stream bed. If you have any questions after reviewing this report, please do not hesitate to contact this office.
