Our services were performed during the period of October 24, 2001 through February 20, 2003. The scope of our services included the following: • Providing testing and observation services during utility trench backfill operations including joint trench, water main, water lateral, sewer main, sewer lateral and storm drain. Additionally, in-place density tests were performed during the preparation of subgrade for curb and gutter, streets, and sidewalk as well as during the placement of aggregate base and asphalt concrete pavement. • Performing laboratory tests on selected samples of soil, aggregate base and asphalt concrete. • Providing geotechnical consulting services during the installation of site improvements. • Preparing this final report of improvements. To aid in preparing this report, we have reviewed the following reports and plans associated with the project improvements: • Final Report of Testing and Observation Services During Site Grading, Roesch Property, Carlsbad, CaUfornia, prepared by Geocon Incorporated, dated December 19, 2001 (Project No. 06074-52-04). • Improvement Plans for: Roesch Property CT 98-19, prepared by Hunsaker & Associates, dated September 12, 2001. 6960 Flanders Drive • San Diego, California 92121-2974 • Telephone (858) 558-6900 • Fox (858) 558-6159 During the construction of site improvements, placement and compaction procedures were observed and in-place density tests were performed to evaluate the dry density and moisture content of the fill material. In-place dry density tests for soil and aggregate base were performed using a nuclear density gauge in accordance with ASTM Test Procedure D 2922-96. In-place density tests for asphalt concrete were performed using a nuclear gauge in accordance with ASTM Test Procedure D 2950-96. Laboratory tests were performed on representative samples of soil and aggregate base to evaluate moisture-density relationships, optimum moisture content, and maximum dry density (ASTM D 1557-00). Laboratory tests on asphalt concrete samples were performed in accordance with ASTM test procedures for Hveem Density (D2?26-96a); Theoretical Maximum Density (D 1560-92); StabiHty (D 6307-98); and Sieve Analysis (C 136-96a). In general, the on-site and imported fill materials consist of sand, silty sand, and sandy gravel. Laboratory tests of asphalt concrete were performed to verify conformance with Standard Specifications for PubHc Works Construction (Green Book). Our laboratory testing indicated that the amoimt of aggregate passing the No. 4 sieve, for both asphalt concrete sample Nos. AC-2 and AC-3, was slightly below the lower bound of the Green Book specification of 50%. Additionally, the amount of aggregate passing the Vs-inch sieve for asphalt concrete sample No. AC-2 was 68%, which is lower than the Green Book specified range of 74-100%. Upon completion of laboratory testing, these results were provided to the site superintendent. It is our opinion that these slight deviations from specification are minor and will likely not affect the long-term performance of the pavement section. The results of our laboratory tests indicate that the asphalt concrete meets or exceeds the required stability value of 35. The results of the in-place density tests for soil, aggregate base and asphalt concrete are summarized in Table I. Laboratory test results are summarized in Tables II through VI. In general, the results of the in-place density tests indicate that the utility trench backflll materials possess a dry density of at least 90 percent of the laboratory maximum dry density at the locations tested. In-place density tests indicate that the curb and gutter subgrade, street subgrade, and aggregate base materials possess a dry density of at least 95 percent of the laboratory maximum dry density at the locations tested. In-place density testing was performed during the placement and compaction of asphalt concrete. The test results indicate that the relative compaction of 95 percent of the laboratory Hveem density was achieved at the locations tested. Based on observations and test results, it is the opinion of Geocon Incorporated that the installation of site improvements, which is the subject ofthis report, has been performed in substantial conformance with the recommendations ofthe previously referenced project geotechnical report. Project No. 06074-52-05 - 2 - March 26, 2003 Any additional grading and/or improvement installation performed at the site should be accomplished in conjunction with our observation and compaction testing services. All trench and wall backfill should be compacted to a dry density of at least 90 percent of the laboratory maximum dry density. This office should be notified at least 48 hours prior to commencing additional grading or backfill operations. Adequate drainage provisions are imperative. Under no circumstances should water be allowed to pond adjacent to improvements. Finish grades should be established so that drainage water is directed away from pavements, curb and gutters and sidewalks to controlled drainage devices. Irrigation of landscape areas adjacent to pavements should be monitored to provide just enough water to support plant hfe.
